My problem is this:

We use Google Chat for work ( I teach). Having the Chat app with notifications on my phone is super useful for a number of reasons. However, I would like a way to separate work/spare time, and at this point, I can't.

While it's easy to say "just ignore everything that gets sent during your off time", there are messages from students and colleagues alike that I feel the need to answer straight away if I actually see them.

Basically, what I want is: Google Chat notifications on, Monday-Friday 07:45 to 16:45, but off the remainder of the week. I've tried the workaround of just deactivating notifications for 8 hours when I leave work, which gives me peace of mind during the afternoon and night, but occasionally ends up with me getting dogpiled with notifications when I wake up. I've also tried just turning it fully off and on when I leave work and when I get there, but I keep forgetting and it's a bit of a pain.

I thought Focus could pull this off, but unless I make a focus setting where I manually allow all other apps and people (and I see no "select all option), I can't see how.

Is there any way to manage this? A custom shortcut? Something geo locked?

Maybe you can do something with "Focus"?
I tried, but I couldn’t get it to work. Basically, I could get an “at work” mode, but there I had to manually allow/whitelist apps/people. I basically want my work mode to be “all notifications are allowed” and my default/focus off be “all notifications except Chat are allowed”. And I couldn’t get that set up properly. There might be a way, but that’s kind of what I’m asking here. How would I set that up?

I think your work mode would have to be the default (focus off) to allow everything to go through. Then create a focus mode for home. Select all your apps except for Google Chat. Selecting Messages, Phone, & FaceTime should ignore/override the allowed people (based on this thread).

Also, is there any way to manage notifications within the Google Chat app? I know the Microsoft apps (Outlook & Teams) allow you to set quiet hours...not sure if the Google apps have a similar feature or not.

I suspected that I would have to do it "backwards", but I didn't know that allowing the Messages, Phone & FaceTime all would override all the people-specific ones. That might actually be workable. Thanks!

As for scheduling within Google Chat, I can't for the life of me figure out why you can't set "do not disturb"-hours. It seems a no brainer, but the only option is to turn it on/off or set it to off for a set duration (maximum of 8 hours from activation). It would obviously be the best solution here, but for some reason they haven't implemented it.

Buy a iPhone se from 2016 (per any older iPhone for that t) use that as a dedicated work phone. Turn on and turn off the whole phone. I’m using the se as a daily and my 13 as an iPod touch and the se is surprising powerful phone does $60. Still snappy and does what I need it to. New battery changed it sufficiently
