I got this for free.

Using it as a phone doesn't work, there was some problem, I have tried several times. However, I'm not interested in using it as a phone.

I do have the USB cable, and I've noticed that I can even export photos to computers without MacOS, which is pretty cool. I haven't tried the sound recording thing to see if I can export this as well.

But basically I would be interested in using it as an mp3 player without going through iTunes.

I do have access to a MacOS computer, however I do not want to use iTunes to import to it. I might settle on using iTunes on just the phone if there is a way to import just to the phone.

Also open to alternative apps or OSes, if there are any.

If there are any interesting drum machine or multi-track apps I might be interested as well, although it could be a pain given the small screen. Although I really dig that it has a real audio jack.

I used Garageband on my iphone 4 for a number of years (paid for it). I use it as a gimmick thing, something to pass the time but it has such good features that i decided to buy it. I know it can do so so much more but it kept me entertained for years until i upgraded to the iphone SE

That could be interesting, but is there any way to install old apps for it? I would want for free because it's a pretty old device, but is there any way to even get any apps for it?

I have no idea. I stopped using my iphone 4 the moment I got the iphone SE. Will have to charge it up again just to see what does and does not work on it. I know all my music is on it but i used itunes to transfer all my music and you don;t want to use itunes.
