hey guys, I'm trying to downgrade from Mountain lion to Lion on a macbook pro Retina. But from what I've read, some have said that Macbook pro 2012 would only boot and install a specific version of 10. 7. 4 . So is there more than one version?

I already have 10. 7. 4 of Lion on a usb stick but just don't know if its specifically for the 2012 macbook pros.

Its so strange that you mention this but I guess that there are some different ones. I mean, they are all the same number but the build is probably different and the way it adjust to each specific machine has a lot to do with it. This is the way I feel about it but maybe someone who's more Mac savvy would be a lot better help to you.;)

You cannot boot a Mac using a version of OS X that is older than the version that shipped with the computer. If your Mac shipped with OS X 10.7.4 or later, then your version of the OS will not work with your computer.

Yes, there are different builds for the retina MBP and MacBook Air.
The 10.7.4 build you need for the retina is 11E2068 or 11E2617, otherwise it won't boot.
I'm not sure if the regular 10.7.4 build works on the regular mid-2012 MBPs.

For more information, check Mac OS X versions (builds) for computers.

My macbook shipped with Mountain lion 10.8 , does that mean that these previous 10. 7. 4 builds, 11E2068 or 11E2617, regardless if they were shipped with other macbook retinas.., won't install on my macbook ?

Those builds will work on your machine.

See this info from Apple. 10.7.4 build numbers 11E2068, 11E2617, and 12A269 came with the Retina. If you can obtain that build you can use it to do a clean install on your machine.

The problem is getting that build. I suspect the USB key you have is 10.7.4 from the App Store and that will not work. To get the Retina build of 10.7.4 you would need to have someone with a Retina that came with Lion follow this process to get the correct Lion build from Apple's servers (not the App Store), then make your USB key from that.
