Is there really a RAM limit?

I have a first generation 2.0Ghz Core Duo iMac. I just looking for some clarification about the maximum amount of RAM supported by my chipset. I had read once that the max amount specified by Apple was the max amount that they sold at the time. I currently have 2Gb installed, but is anyone 100% sure that 4Gb will not be recognized by the system?
