I'm thinking of getting the New Mini Server and loading the SL Client for use as a desktop like many have done. I just want to confirm if there is much of a market out there to sell my unused copy of the SL Server Unlimited? They appear to be going for between $2-300US.

Doubt it will work. Usually bundled copies of Apple's OSs only work on the model of computer they came with.

Really? I thought I had read posts in the past where other owners were able to sell their SL Server Unlimited software. I would really like to know for sure....either way. Thanks!!!

Perhaps we are dealing with two separate questions:

1) Will the unused SLS disc that comes with the new Mini Server be usable to somone else who wants to install SLS? For example, can the buyer get a fully functioning SLS installation based on that disc?

2) Can the SLS disc that comes with Mac Mini be sold legally assuming one acquires SL client installation disc to install on the Mini Server?

Yes. The first is my key question. The second is assumed.

Can I resell the unopened unused SL Sever software and it's unlimited license? Can it be installed on any Intel based Mac?

Does anyone know if this is a practical option? I would really like to get the Mini Server and offset the cost by reselling the Server software/license. Thanks!!!

The fact you just came up with this idea tells me, no.

If it was easy to do, you think you'd be the first to notice this awesome little gaffe?!

My understanding is that the SLS that comes with the mini is slightly different that the retail package and won't run on anything but a mini. And knowing how the OEM disks work, it probably won't work on anything but the current mini. I have read that the late-2009 mini SLS will install on any late-2009 mini, so I expect that the mid-2010 mini SLS will install on any mid-2010 mini. So the market would exist but would be small (how many purchasers of the basic mini would want to buy SLS, since for the additional $300 you get SLS, 2 GB more RAM, a faster processor, and triple the hard disk capacity?)

It wasn't my idea. I can't find the thread right now but another member was talking about selling his SL Server software that came with the Mini to offset the costs. He was in Canada so I started this thread to get some feedback about US based resale possibilities.

I wouldn't expect it to be a real 'gaffe' netting the full price of the SL Server editions $500. A few hundred would be nice. I did see in another thread one Mini owner offering to trade his SL Client disks for SL Server disks. Not exactly a stellar deal but it would at least offset the cost of buying new Client software.

The software from the disc will only install on a same generation mini.

However, if someone can find a copy of Snow Leopard Server (either a retail disc or a torrent) then they can purchase your serial card and number from you and use that to register. That serial is full and can be applied to any install.)

Hope that helps.

That totally helps. Now I just need to figure out what the average resale value of the license would be. It's pretty easy to get install disks from what I have seen.
