Something's been annoying me lately. I'm trying to achieve TRUE push support for my email between all of my Apple devices. iCloud almost reaches it, but falls short. My main problem is pushing the read status to my Mail icon in both iOS and in Apple Mail. If I read something in Apple Mail, I'd like my red badge on the icon on the iPhone to immediately (or even within a few minutes) reflect that. If I read something on my iPhone, I'd like my Mac's mail badge to reflect that as well. Right now, my read status and badges only seem to update on my iPhone when I open up Mail and it connects. And on the Mac side, it only updates every 15 minutes or so when it has to "fetch" the read status from the server. I've tried this using Google's Business Mail (since they disabled Exchange on their free version of Google Apps) and I've tried Office365 as well. Both of those, along with iCloud, have the same issues - the read badges only update on fetch. I'm getting my email pushed to me just fine - it's just the read statuses that's driving me crazy! Does anybody have any suggestions?

Really? You don't have to launch Mail on your iPhone to get the sync to kick in? And they update on the Mac, too? Are you using an iPhone 5 with iOS 6.1.2?

Just a quick update: It seems to be an Apple Mail issue. If I go on my Gmail webmail and mark a message as read and unread, it immediately updates on my phone without having the email app open. If I mark it as read and unread on my Mac, things just don't sync at all. Is there a workaround for this while using Apple Mail?

Apple's iCloud is IMAP-based but does not stay connected to their servers, which inhibits the instant message updates. Updates happen when 1) you open/refresh the iOS mail.app or 2) a new message is pushed to the devices. Exchange EAS stays connected to the servers and will update in real time. iCloud works just like mobile.me did.
