Looking to buy a NON-tethered jb-able 3gs.
Here's one I found, I just wanna make sure if i get it its non-tethered.
Model number starts with MC
Serial number starts with 88928.
It is jailbroken and unlocked, I guess.
But the guy sounds kinda clueless :)
Lemme know!
Thank you

If that is the serial number it should be capable of an untethered jailbreak. You should ask him not to restore the phone before he ships it; you don't want to get a freshly-updated and no-longer-unlockable phone.

But that means its a week 28 right?
Arent all 3gs before week 40 a NON-tethered jb?

Yeah, thanks for the advice... that would kinda suck, haha. :)

A question.... just got a 3GS with serial # 87004 and firmware 3.1.2. Is this thing a tethered jailbreaker or not? Thanks in advance.

Yea, real tethered / 4th week of 2010

Ah well.... shall I wait for a untethered jailbreak or just go ahead and do it now? If I do it now, when a untethered jb appears for my device (eventually it will.... I hope! :D )will I be able to upgrade it to the untethered jb?

If someone does find an exploit for the tethered jailbreak, sure, you should be able to switch over.

If you wanna JB, use Redsn0w 0.9.2 if you have a 3GS on 3.1.2. But, get a tutorial from iClarified or Hackintosh and follow it carefully, if you screw up, you will be forced to go to 3.1.3 firmware. Also, once the JB is done, you will have to run Redsn0w again to restart the phone.

Read up on tethered jailbreaks !

Do I have to use Redsn0w or can I use Blackrain? It seems Blackrain is easier to do....

.... also, when I do this and go to do the Shift+Restore to use the 3.1.2 firmware I downloaded, it says it will verify with Apple, but Ive been reading around and it appears as if Apple no longer signs 3.1.2 firmware... so if I do this, and the error comes back that it cannot be signed by Apple, do I have to go to 3.1.3 or can I just cancel the whole thing out and stay on 3.1.2 stock?

Dont try to restore to 3.1.2
If it hasnt been JB before and dont have the SHSH's saved thru cydia you'd be stuck.
I say leave it at 3.1.2 and run blackrain.
And every time you need to restart plug it in and run blackrain again.

I was thinking exactly this... this is what I did with my brother's 3GS, and it worked like a charm. I will try this now... wish me luck! :(
