Is this a bad idea? (Macbook open box??)

I'm going to Best Buy tomorrow to get a Macbook, but I called and they said that they only have opened ones. Other Best Buy stores only have display models, there's no Apple Store around (I'm in Canada), and I can't order online because I'm moving out this week. I could send it to my apartment, but then I won't have my music or anything.

I can open the box and turn it on before I buy it, and it's still covered by Applecare and Best Buy. I don't get my edu discount, but the open box discount is a better deal.

I know that earlier Macbooks had a lot of problems. How can I make sure that the Macbook I buy isn't defective? What should I look for?

They said that defective Macbooks are returned to the manufacturer, but their definition of defective might be different from mine. I'm buying a 1.83ghz white model.

Wait, and buy a new one or order one online from one of the decent Mac Catalog resellers.

If you go the catalog reseller route, they may have some freebies availabe, and no tax.

For some reason I'd run screaming from a Best Buy open box deal.
 
What's a catalogue reseller?

We have one reseller in town but he isn't open Sundays or Mondays (most shops downtown in Canada aren't, it's baffling). I'm moving a good 800km away Monday night and my parents are buying this on credit, so. They just decided to buy me one today, but I'm having a hard time complaining about it, heh.

Also, I'm going to school for design, and I want my extraneous Photoshop files and my older work... It won't all fit on a USB key and my computer doesn't have a burner. I could transfer it easily over our home network, though.

My only other option is going to the Apple Store before I get on the flight, but that's the same problem... Maybe if I offer to pay them back they'll go down to TO and get a new one.

i'd say go ahead and get it (doesn't sound like you have too many options, anyway). if you find any problems, you still have your warranty to fall back on.
