They should work fine in the 3,1http://www.ebay.com/itm/151175467545?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
it says ecc in description. its mainly going to be used as a file server/handbrake machine.
I thought you need ddr2 ecc.
At any rate I upped my 2008 to 24 GB, after that I went with a 4,1 unit.
I used ram with correct heat sinks.
The 2006-2008 models use DDR2 ECC FB-DIMMs (fully buffered). Those are the DIMMs with the huge heat sinks on them (like on the eBay link the OP posted). They used different speeds (667MHz in the 1,1/2,1 and 800MHz in the 3,1 2008) as well.
Thanks for all your feedback. I have a new 2013 mac pro quad I just got a few days ago. I thought the 2008 would make a good time machine and file server.
Yeah, that makes more sense to me too. The OP could get a 4-bay RAID enclosure and sit the Mac Mini on top of it, and it would still take up way less space and power than a cMP.That's a bit overkill for just those tasks. I'd go for a Mini and enjoy the immense savings in energy and space you'd gain instead of going with a 7 year old behemoth. Then again, if you want the setup of having the HDD's withIN the file server, then I guess the Mac Pro makes sense.
Still, I'd go with a Mini.
