I just bought on a early 2008 mac pro 8 core 2.8 4gb ram for 435 shipped. Is this a fair deal for the machine?

thanks

Hello,

The only issue with a 2008 is the price for RAM. Have you checked the prices? If you need a lot more than 4GB, you'll be unpleasantly surprised.

Otherwise, it's a decent machine still.

I thought you need ddr2 ecc.

At any rate I upped my 2008 to 24 GB, after that I went with a 4,1 unit.

I used ram with correct heat sinks.

OP, that's a good price especially if the sticks are 1 or 2 GB.

The 2006-2008 models use DDR2 ECC FB-DIMMs (fully buffered). Those are the DIMMs with the huge heat sinks on them (like on the eBay link the OP posted). They used different speeds (667MHz in the 1,1/2,1 and 800MHz in the 3,1 2008) as well.

The 2009-2012 models used standard DDR3 DIMMs (ECC preferred).

It's perfectly possible to use the cheaper & more widely available 667MHz FB-DIMMs in a 3,1 2008 Mac Pro. There is no perceptible difference in real life performance (Barefeats benchmarked it at just 4% slower http://barefeats.com/harper5.html)

Thanks for all your feedback. I have a new 2013 mac pro quad I just got a few days ago. I thought the 2008 would make a good time machine and file server.

That's a bit overkill for just those tasks. I'd go for a Mini and enjoy the immense savings in energy and space you'd gain instead of going with a 7 year old behemoth. Then again, if you want the setup of having the HDD's withIN the file server, then I guess the Mac Pro makes sense.

Still, I'd go with a Mini.

Yeah, that makes more sense to me too. The OP could get a 4-bay RAID enclosure and sit the Mac Mini on top of it, and it would still take up way less space and power than a cMP.

At the same time, if the cMP is in good working order (and stays that way), that's a hard price to beat.
