Is this a good deal for MacBook?

I found one 1.83Ghz CoreDuo, 1GB, 60GB white MacBook on CL for $750. It's still covered in warranty and I can purchase apple care for it.

I looked in person last night and it's in excellent condition and everything works perfectly.

Is it a good deal for the price?

The owner couldn't find the reciept, will I have problem activating the apple care I'm gonna get from eBay?

Anything major I should be careful about that first gen. MacBook?

I've heard it runs fairly hot. so have anyone used CoolBook? Wondering whether it works well or not.

CD macbooks like this one are 799 in refurb store, so just depends if you would like to spend a little more for a "new" machine.

I have a CD and have no problems with heat, runs fine. Fans do speed up under heavy usage, but it has never been too hot to handle.

There are none in the store now for about the same specs. On top of that, you'll have to pay tax too.

Oh well, I think I'll get it. It's gonna replace my Titanium powerbook G4 1.0GHz, which is going to my parent. Also helps me save a bit for a new iMac or Mac Pro down the road.

I really wouldn't consider it that great of a deal. You can get a refurbished 1.83GHz Core <b>2</b> Duo machine for $850 straight from Apple (so you'll get the full first year warranty, which alone is worth over $125, considering two years of AppleCare costs $250). Only 512MB of ram on the refurb machine, but RAM these days is mega-cheap.

As for first gen problems, they are numerous:

- Random Shutdown Syndrome
- Super-hot
- Yellowing of hand-rest

Those are the three major ones I can remember about the MacBook.
 
It's not the best deal in the world, but it's not bad either. You may want to keep your eye on the Apple refurb store though for a little longer before pulling the trigger on this. Unless, the seller has a line of potential buyers right behind you. You'll be cursing yourself if you get this and a refurb pops up a few days later. If possible, I'd say watch the refurb store, you'll always be better off buying from Apple if you can.
 
I would try to talk him down a bit. Offer $650 and see what he says... or offer $600 and hope he comes back at you with $650. CL isn't like a store - some bantering is expected.

At any rate, at $750 I would pass, personally.

Alrite guys. I'll pass on this one and look at the refurb macs. Never bought them and hopefully they'll be ok.

How often do they update the refurb page usually?

they are fine bought my gf a 1.83 core duo last year never skipped a beat.
 
They restock twice a week from what I know. Tuesdays and Fridays I think it is. Refurb'ed macs actually go through a very stringent process, your likely to get a solid machine when u get a refurb
