I guess it depends? As long as there is no impact point and just a single hairline, Apple typically may replace it under warranty. I'd have Apple take a look at it and explain to them that it just happened as you stated that there was no drop.

I have to agree with Achillias and it looks like an impact to me. Looks like even the SS band is scratched. A better picture with better lighting would have helped.

What happened to the case on the upper right side?

Just to clarify, this is an iphone 8/8 Plus and not the X. Doesn't have the notch

Regardless, looks like something struck the screen right at the speaker hole. Even the stainless band looks like it was involved. When you got tow cracks radiating outward from a point, it is most likely impact damage.
Regardless I understand it appears to be an impact damage but iphone 8/8 Plus doesn't use SS band unlike the iphone X.

Edit: Since when did iPhone 8/8 Plus get Stainless steel band?

Thank you everyone. I have no idea what could have hit it. Like it wasn’t a drop. I don’t think a rock hit it right there. Just baffling. I don’t think it’s worth getting repaired at this point.

Yeah it's unfortunate but something definitely hit it. These screens can crack without you even realizing you hit something. May have just bumped something sharp at just the right angle, not even enough where you'd remember it.

I experienced this with one of my screen protectors last year on my 7, but came to conclusion that someone in class accidentally pushed my phone off the desk and feel to the floor while I was using the bathroom. They probably didn’t want to take responsibility for their actions and put it back up with the screen down so I wouldn’t notice. It wasn’t until the last class of the day I realized it had some tiny crack on the edge and it just kept cracking through until I got home and ran off to the store.

You could possibly cover over the damage somewhat with a tempered glass screen protectors with black bezels. I use one called SuperShieldz. This brand has saved my silver 8 Plus and my Pixel 2. My Pixel 2 would have been shattered in the same way as your phone when it was sticking out of my back pocket as I was standing up too close to a hallway nightlight. My butt and the phone hit the light’s metal shade. Talk about a freak accident.

The display protector was shattered but the display was good.

Several weeks ago I dropped my iPhone on the tiled kitchen floor. The screen protector developed a small crack. Over the next couple of weeks the protector spiderwebbed and had to be removed. The glass underneath was fine. I had the black screen protector over white bezels and it covered very well. Which makes me think this might work to cover the damage on your display until you can fix it. It will at least keep you from getting badly scratched.

Personally, I would repair it, it’s still a fairly recent device within the last year, and it will ultimately help the resale value if you do plan on selling it later on. If you’re concerned about Apples OEM prices to have a repair, you could consider third-party, but make sure you do your research and a reputable third-party repair shop.
