Greetings all from Northwest China home to its restive Uyghur (Turkic muslim) population. Two days before I am to go to Kazakhstan, my ipod, again has crapped out on me. I am the not so proud owner of a 4g 40gb player.

here is the thing...this is MY Fourth replacement. after replacing this one, it will mark five. I have, since my second one, been ever so cautious, keeping it in a rubber soft case, and wrapped in a second hard case.

Anyway, what happens is that the disk just suddenly stops reading, i get the empty folder and then it craps out. This time is slightly different...the music was still there but it would skip to the next song without playing and it would continue to do so. Like it was trying to find the music but couldn't...

what is wrong with what i'm doing? I thought it might be my music, so this time when i reloaded my ipod i didn't put on any music that i had acquired since the first breakdown.

i've apple care so i'm not concerned about the replacement, but i'm really quite sick of dealing with this. has anyone else had similar problems?

wow that just sucks.. you must be cursed :) . I don't really know what could cause that problem...i mean i take it you don't throw it across the floor and stuff haha. The weather shouldn't be an issue...Have you looked on Apple's support site? that's your best bet to finding the answer from me...

Sorry to hear about your iPod problems.
Sounds like you ran into a string of some rather bad luck.
Here is to hoping that your fifth iPod replacement is your last one!

oddly enough I've heard of this happening to a few people. They go through 2-3-4 iPods before they get one that last. I've had mine for almost an year now and it's fine, but when I hear stories like this I'm not super surprised. I dunno what the delio is but it happens.

Are you particularly rough on them or something? They are hard drive based which can make them pretty susceptible to corruption if you bounce them around too much. :(

My girlfriend has had the same problem and is on her fifth iPod now. 4G 40GB. She isn't rough on them or anything. Her current one is crapped out now, and so she is going to demand a refund. Rightly so. Use the money and buy a 60 GB color iPod.

I read in Apple's discussion forums that this a substantial problem with the 40GB drives. Gee, wonder why those got discontinued...

Complain to Apple. They might sympathize and give you a better iPod. DON'T BE A PAIN IN THEIR ASS-- THEY ARE HUMAN. Just be nice and say you like the iPod but it never works long enough for you...

The music you are playing... is it purchased from the iTMS?

DO NOT WORRY! Well..maybe. The SAME EXACT THING happened to me. the latest problem happened to me TWICE. Here's what you do. Call up Apple and complain that this is happeneing WAY TOO OFTEN. they'll transfer you UP the ladder to a tech expert or whatever. HE SHOULD GIVE YOU A 60PHOTO if not, complain until he/she does. but yeah, they're sending you refurbs this whole time and after a certain number they're just all 'man I'm sick of having to send you refurbs here's a 60photo off the shelf.'
The process to get the 60 takes a while (you have to ship in your 40 w/ everything in it then they send you the 60) but it'll be worth it (i hope)
