Is this a normal iPhone 3G silent/ringer switch? Can I trade mine in?

So my silent switch on my iPhone 3G is kinda stiff, and I've heard that stiffness is one possible indicator of a faulty silent switch. Also, the metal cap part kinda jiggles when I thumb it. So far, I've been lucky that nothing has happened with it (like the metal cap falling off), but I'm getting sorta paranoid as time goes by.

I got my iPhone 3G way back in July and never realized how much stiffer my switch was until I tried out my friend's iPhone 3G and found his to be smooth and easy to flip. Mine does "click" when I flip it from ringer-to-silent and silent-to-ringer, but every time I flip it, I feel like I'm going to snap it off because it flips over so hard and sharply. To compare, my switch goes like "on-off" really fast and hard, while my friend's is more "onnn-off" and really gradual/smooth.

Am I just being too picky about this? I never really had a problem with it until I read about other people's metal switches coming off and trying other people's switches. Would Apple even let me switch out for a new iPhone 3G since nothing (as far as I'm aware) is actually broken?

I haven't heard of this before, but I've heard of some switches the complete opposite - always flicking when not wanted.

If you really feel something is wrong with it just take it back and ask about it - it won't harm anybody.

Well, I wanted to get other people's opinions first b/c the closest apple store's pretty out of the way, so I want to avoid unnecessary driving if at all possible.

i had the same problem and concern with my iphone couple weeks ago, i don't mean to scare you or anything, but my switcher ended up falling off, so i had to go to the apple store to get it replaced. now its working just fine so far, and I'm hoping that it won't happen again. so if that eventually happens to you just make an appointment at the apple store they will replace it for you without any further questions asked. In other words, no hard times.

That's great to hear. When I first got my iPhone, I rarely (if ever) used the silent switch, and it's only now that classes have started that I've been using it more and noticing how stiff the silent switch is. Mainly, I wanted to know if I should/could be preventative and switch out for a new one before things went bad.

i believe that if you try to switch phones right now, most likely they would not do it just because it still in good standings and working. however, like i said if it eventually brakes, based on my experience at the store they will definitely switch it out for you.

next time your near an apple store ask a genius just incase
