iPhone Is this an undiscovered iOS 9.0 feature? (iPhone 6 only)

With the iPhone 6 redesign Apple placed the sleep/wake button exactly opposite the volume rocker. When I would go to change the volume I would often accidentally press the sleep button, putting the phone to sleep.

With iOS 9, if you press the sleep/wake button at the same time as one of the volume buttons the phone does not sleep.

Has anyone else noticed this? Can someone with iOS 8 confirm that this is indeed a new feature?

Out of sheer curiosity I tested this on a 5s and the same thing happened... I know it was never like that in iOS 8 so I'm guessing it is a new feature.

Doesn't work for me, still goes to sleep. Unless I'm doing it wrong/misinterpreted?

Really? I recall putting my 6plus to sleep grabbing the volume and power buttons... So, if not in 9.x maybe it was done late in 8.x and we didn't notice?

Uh, what? This is one of my biggest gripes with the iPhone 6. It is DEFINITELY present on the iOS 8, and is incredibly frustrating - I always hit volume when I mean to turn the phone off, and instead it stays awake and turns the volume up. Annoying.

Yeah, its one of those 'damned if you do' things, but I don't know... I find its much easier to accidentally do it while you're trying to turn off the phone compared to when you're trying to turn up the volume. Maybe it's just me?!

Am I missing something? First I don't understand what the problem is? The volume buttons are on a completely different side then the power/sleep wake button, how are you always hitting volume instead of power, or power instead of volume?

And whats the bid deal? So you hit the volume by mistake, then just hit the power button again...

Depends on how you told the device. Since they are directly across you can hold the device with one hand where some of the fingers are directly across and would get pressed as you squeeze your hand to press the button you want on the other side. The bigger consequence there is the one where you mean to adjust volume and turn the screen off, for example when you are watching something which interrupts it all.

Yeah I'm not getting it either. If I have enough of a grip on the phone to simultaneously press the volume and sleep button then I will already be able to feel which is which and only need to press the intended one.

Squeezing one side of the hand can often apply similar pressure on the other side and thus the button on the other side can be pressed as well.

Wow, I have missed tons of photographic moments just because of this, because I hit the power and the volume button accidentally and the screen went off, before I managed to get a photo! Thanks a lot for mentioning this!

They are but it's a very wide phone and even with my big hands it's not easy to wrap my hand around and press the buttons on both sides simultaneously.
