Foolishly I yanked my mac pro without realising it was plugged in. there was an audible cracking sound and now there is a crack in the plastic. it still charges but you have to force the connection a bit

Yes, just replace it, it's a simple USB cable, you don't have to get a replacement from Apple, a cheaper Anker charging cable will do fine.

To me, I don't worry that there's a crack in the plastic. What worries me is that you have to force the connection. If it's just a crack in the plastic, I wouldn't bat an eye. But needing to force a connection means that it is possible to wear out or damage the USB C port over time. I would replace the cable.

Do you have to force other cables or the other end of this one as well? If you do, you may have damaged the connector inside teh Mac and should get it checked.
