like the title says, this may be beating a dead horse, but i want a final verdict, and perhaps some proof if anyone can post a link to literature addressing the matter....

I thought i remembered reading rumors around the end of last year that a possible lightweight MBP might be coming, but those rumors seemed put to rest when the macbooks came out, and i think i remember reading not to hold my breath for any small MBP since the macbooks were/are such a hit.

I'm in the process of selling my 2.16 C2D MBP and was wondering if the small/12" MBP horse can be put to death, or whether i might be surprised "next tuesday"

If you can point me to any literature on this subject, it would be most appreciated. Like i said above, i know this topic has been mentioned before, but i couldn't come up with anything searching the forum, so please don't post useless one-liners about how old this topic is.....

thanks in advance for your help

I do not think that it will happen anytime soon, if it does though I would guess that it would be near Leopards release.

you're better off looking at the rumors as a sort of joke, until they start to get hottttt. :p

when these new technologies come out (wireless n, blu-ray, multitouch lcd, flash memory, etc.) there are instantly rumors about a new apple product that will make use of it.

i'd say hold your breathe for the inclusion of a blu-ray drive in SOME type of mac, before you get excited about an ultra portable.

i don't see it happening for a while.

unless you consider a small device that runs os x, uses multi touch, run's off flash memory, allows you to check email and browse web, while letting you listen to music and watch videos....

maybe that ultra portable is coming out june 29th

Like yourself, I would love to see a smaller mac. A 13.3" mbp around 4 pounds would be a dream.

There isn't much evidence right now with any hard facts showing any new mac products. Only thing giving me some hope was the article about 13" led screens that apple ordered to be sold in q3 or maybe q4. Since the macbook was just updated, though very underwhelming, I don't know if they plan to update them again in a couple months.

I am hoping that after the iphone craze is over, and in late summer, maybe august, they come out with the new laptop for back to school. Or they might have it come out along with leopard so it can use the software optimized for flash memory etc.

If it doesn't come then, then MWSF 08 would be an awesome place for it along with Penryn.

So basically there is no way to know when it will come out. It is going to be the undying rumor for quite some time. But don't expect anything in the next month and a bit.

I will be waiting hoping for this, but if not, I will probably pick up the next macbook update, as long as it has Santa Rosa and led.

I wouldn't expect to see it this year. But I wouldn't be shocked to see an ultra-ultra-portable tablet that takes advantage of multi-touch next year if the iPhone sells like many anticipate. As for a 13" MBP, I wouldn't be shocked to see one next year.

Rumors are definitely something to just take with a grain of salt.

No one knows.

However, I think they will—the 12" PB is still a coveted machine, because it is so portable and sexy. But I bet Apple will want to put in a high-res screen to differentiate it from the MacBook, and that will mean waiting till Leopard and resolution independence. (Ditto a high-res 15" MBP and regular ol' 15" MB).

I think it's a market Apple should and will cater to, but I could be wrong... after all, the same could be said for a mid-tower.

I've also been waiting, since the initial MBP for a small pro version. I ended up getting a Blackbook, but will upgrade if/when a small MBP is released. However, based upon Apple's recent track record, it will probably be announced first, then we will be able to buy one about 8 months later , not including inevitable delays. It seems all Apple has really done for me lately is announce they are going to eventually release cool new products. All I do is wait.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a small Apple notebook someday, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Intel is working on some better chips for small for factors.
