I think anything that old/small capacity will be standard fixings.
It's only larger capacity drives where the fixing holes have moved slightly.
I always used WD or Seagate drives.

What are you using the HDD drive for?
You can get an SSD for not much more.

Thanks, I hope they’re universal dimensions!

I’ll be using it to store things temporarily. I want to get something better later. I know I could get an SSD for not much more, but I would have to get an additional sled I think. I already have an SSD in my Mac Pro and it needed one of those adapted sleds.

The SSD drives are so light now, they don't need a sled ... you can also prop something below them for a bit of support. Also, they run much cooler, than a hard drive, which is good for your Mac. With hard drives, ensure you get a CMR, not SMR, which are bad news.

I'd be leery of installing even an SSD that way, where the main support is the from SATA connections themselves (power, data). A slight bit of torque, as when moving the Mac, could damage. Why not use an inexpensive internal combo SATA cable?

Great idea. I used a wooden chop stick, cut down to size for support. I rarely move my machine though ... but I'll get the cable, a much better idea.

Or an OWC sled for less than £14 from Amazon UK.
They are reduced in Australia at the moment for not much more than that price.

My issue is that when I spend money on the 5,1 I feel that its wasted because I don't know if anything will be compatible with the coming M Pros.

Cables are ugly while the sled is elegant. And the 5,1 is elegant.

For me, its $Au35 for a sled and $Au5 for an extension cable. The main negative on a cable is cooling air interference - a cable will block some of the air flow. And then there's the issue of not wasting money on a short term term purchase issue as I think the 5,1 has very little time to go with perhaps an affordable Mac Pro M coming ...

I plan to change my Pro as well (against a Mini however), but I still got the sled because I’m thinking I can always sell the sleds after I sell my Mac Pro. Someone will surely need them and a lot of people like the classic Mac Pro for all the ways how it can be modified and upgraded.
