So I got my iPad today. Long story short, there's what appears to be a small piece of detritus embedded in the glass of the screen itself. At first, I thought it was something that was under my screen protector...which I completely ruined trying to get it out.

After removing the protector, I realized it was in the glass itself. It's a small spec almost dead center. I can only assume this isn't supposed to be there? If that's the case, what kind of nightmare am I looking at to get this thing replaced?

Well, went down to the Mac store. The first two they pulled out had dead pixles. So I'm now on my fourth iPad in two days. Hopefully this one won't present any issues. I don't really want to use it until I get a screen protector on it, so I'll find out Monday or Tuesday once I put it through the paces.

i dont know how so many people have bad luck! i've never had trouble with an apple product! knock on wood!

I've never really understood comments like this being posted in a thread where somebody is having hardware issues. Short of making the original poster feel worse what is the point?

To share my personal story I would say I've had issues with about 30% or so of my Apple products... going back to 1986 and the SE30 iirc. Stuck pixels, bad motherboards, nVidia graphic card failures, etc.

Apple does not have anywhere near 100% quality control. I doubt any other company does either though. What really matters to me is that Apple has consistently taken good care of me when I have had problems.

i think the people that got perfect units (99%) just don't come online to bitch about it. everything they sell comes with a one year warranty! so even if you are the 1% just swap it out before you ever leave the store. wow huge problems. i mean do you guys buy a pair of shoes without trying them on first?

MBP as well!

I've had 5 of the last 7 MBP with the original problem you had on your iPad. It's like a spec embedded in the glass.

Like I said earlier, I am a 24 year Mac user. I've had pretty good luck with my machines, but have had several that have had problems. I don't drink the Apple cool aid though, so maybe I don't get the religious fervour some people have about Apple.

My comment you quoted was in regard to people who got perfect units who come on to a thread created by somebody who is frustrated by a problem and say "I don't know what your problem is, mine is fine".

How does that add value to the thread? It seems extremely childish to me. Wouldn't it be easier to simply not post a comment in the thread?

The only reason I started this thread was to figure out if my iPad had a legitimate problem, or if what I was looking at was some kind of sensor imbedded in the glass or something. It wasn't "to bitch."

If I'm paying $700 for anything, it better damn be great out of the box. If I damage it, then so be it, but I'm not going to accept obvious manufacturing defects on day one that I had nothing to do with. Would any of you accept scratches on your new cars? No, I doubt you would.

I don't think my unit should have been delivered with an obvious flaw, and I don't think I should have had to travel across town and waste an entire day getting it resolved...and then be handed two defective units as replacements, before finally getting one that's proper.

Maybe it's just me. If some of you mind defects and blowing time on Apple, that's fine, but don't fault the rest of us 'cause we have lives and don't want to deal with it.

...that aside, I'm loving the iPad, and it's a great product. But again, for what I paid for it, I'm not accepting any crap.

Why a screen protector? No point with these devices. Heck, the iPads don't even get slid around my pocket like my iPhone have, and my iPhones never got a single scratch on them, no screen protectors. Just use it and enjoy it. A screen protector really takes the fun out of an iPad.

I'd rather err on the side of caution. A power support crystal screen protector subtracts nothing at all from the experience, and is $25 to replace if it gets scratched or gouged (as opposed to $700 for the device itself). Pretty cheap insurance, methinks.
