If the iBoot version you see is iBoot-359.3.2 then sorry! You cannot Jailbrake your iPhone!
I thought the latest version of blackra1n fixed this? But the phones with the new bootrom would be a tethered jailbreak.

If the phone turns off am I correct in thinking that I can simply plug it into the computer, click 'make it ra1n', and after boot all my apps and jailbroken apps will be there untouched?
Exactly. As long as you have a computer with blackra1n and a USB cable handy, you'll be back and running in 30 seconds.
People actually considering going with "tethered" Jailbreaks? What happens when a battery dies when you're in a car - can't even plug it into to a charger. Or you simply need to reboot because an app locked up? You need to carry a laptop and cable with you at all times!

I just had my iPhone 3GS replaced under warranty. It came out of the small white cardboard. The serial is xxx43. I jailbroke it and restarted it several times and everything seems to be fine. I thought the serial # on my phone meant it should be tethered?
If the 2nd digit in the serial number is a letter and not a number, that means it was remanufactured. I believe it is given a new serial number and new date of re-manufacture (not the original date of manufacture).
You likely have the older bootrom.
