Is this Mac Pro worth upgrading?

It's missing the ram and hard drive? Ram is slightly costly for that one. It can be upgraded somewhat, but it's ancient. It won't run on par with newer hardware. You won't see much of a gpu performance gain on anything past the 5770. If you hunt through ebay, you can upgrade it to an 8 core for $100 or so + (guessing) $200-300 to update ram and hard drive. The last thing to consider is that even after you purchase ram and a hard drive for it, it will only work if the logic board is still good. Your ability to test that is pretty limited without key components.

If it works (like the poster above me mentioned, hard to test without the hdd and ram) it's worth 50 bucks easy. What are you hoping to use it for? I've got a 1,1, with an SSD thrown in (no cpu upgrades) and the thing flies for normal day to day stuff. Upgrade the video card if you like, but make an SSD over a spinning drive your number one $$ priority.

You can use standard ECC FB-DIMM memory. Just transfer the heatsinks. CPU's are plentiful. I upgraded my memory and CPU's (2) for $50 total off ebay.
Good catch. That can be remedied as well, just means you'll be above the $10-$15 mark...but certainly below $200-300
I forgot to check ebay ram prices. Obviously that would save quite a bit. From retailers some of the older FB dimms cost quite a bit. I had figured $80-150 for a boot drive depending on capacity and whether an ssd was preferred. $80 seemed like a reasonable estimate on an HDD. Adding money for the ram retail to the HDD would have pushed it to the $200 mark above machine cost. Yours was a better idea though.

Not sure if my personal opinion will make an impact, since I will upgrade just about anything, but with a bit of work, that MP can be turned into a great machine. As stated before, RAM can get pricey unless you score a deal on Ebay, but processors are usually pretty cheap, like $50. New GPU (or not even new, just an updated one) and you can run Mavericks with the new Bootloader. I would say that you could probably put an additional ~$250 into the machine and make it quite nice. If you can afford it, a PCIe SSD is ALWAYS the way to go if you elect for an upgrade.
hay relay depends on what you want from the computer, but for 50 american you cant go wrong. (i live in the uk mac pro 1.1 cost like £200+)
you will get a nice stable computer which can hold 4HD's with no problem and relatively quiet for it's size. (and an extra 2 if you relay want)
you can buy HD's and a GPU and at a later point get a newer macpro and swap over your drives if you want.
(can only swap ram in to a 1.1/2.1/3.1 and not a 4.1+)
what do you want to do on the computer ? thats the main thing it will be ace for holding lots of files, productivity apps and some gaming (maybe not max settings on the new games but still ok with a newer GPU)
photo editing will be fine, light video editing etc..
add up the price of ram and HD then compare to a mac min, the cheapest one will be faster and quieter & cheeper to upgrade but slightly less cool
and will not hold 4 internal drives if thats what you want.
also might be a fun project
