I bought a MacBook Air from Apple this year and used it only once. I have a tendency to buy things and never open them.

tonight I opened it and the battery was at 0 obviously. I plugged it in and it turned on but was running really slow at 1%. It took a couple of percentage points before it ran well. Is this normal ?

thank you :)

When did you use it last time, and how much battery did it have then? And after last time I assume you just closed the lid?

I must have used it 4 months ago and never charged it. Just used the factory shipped battery charge.

and yes I did just close the lid. I thought that was the way to shut it now with these new machines.

Apple has some guidelines about batteries concerning Macs.

Here's one document:

and I suggest you carefully read the section "Store it half-charged when you store it long-term" with special attention to their notes about full discharges.

Note that this advice isn't specific to Macs, it is relevant to pretty much any current device using lithium-ion batteries.

In a nutshell, these batteries function the best with periodic flow of ions. Li-ion batteries in consumer electronics are designed for regular usage not for long-term neglect.

In any case, your unit should still be within the one-year warranty period. I suggest you use it normally over the next few weeks. If battery life is crippled compared to the published tech specs for that unit, you are strongly advised to get warranty-covered service before the coverage period expires.

Best of luck.

But it was plugged in and not battery when it was a bit sluggish. Is there tune up I can do since I haven’t used it in awhile?

Or somewhere I can see battery health

Now I’m downloading Big Sur and I got this error

Nope. The only thing I’m having now is when I boot and go where I add my password a couple of seconds after adding my password the screen blinks for a millisecond.

normal?
