I might be on the wrong "Forum section" if so please forgive me

I was surfing ebay looking for a 4bay raid in JBOD and a gentleman was selling this used 4bay,(OWC link below) He said when i asked that he was using it as a JBOD with his imac
with on OS of BigSir
when i read the OWC info it says the Max OS compatibility is High seirra
so im wondering how he got it to work on an imac with Bigsir
as i have a mac mini on BigSir and another mac mini on Mojave

is it possible ? bare bones in JBOD mode ? without using the "Softraid" software
or was he just trying to get it sold?

Its showing up sold now, but IF it is possible id buy one from OWC

thanks
John

The enclosure will work with any version of MacOS but the Softraid software will only operate under older versions. If you get one you will have a JBOD enclosure with 4 separate drives.

What is your requirement for RAID? Do you need the fault tolerance? If you just want to have an extra copy of your data online in case you could run regular sync jobs to copy the data from one drive to the backup.

I have the same enclosure ion a 2 bay model. One drive holds all our media and the 2nd is used for local backups from other Macs. Both those drives are backed up on other drives and BackBlaze.

Im just looking for a 4-bay enclosure for putting 4 HDD's into and sorting out all my HDD's (external enclosures)
and into ONE machine
.CRS files,jpegs-ect , saved text files, each into its own HDD and make 2 copys for a back up saved in a fire proof safe
then with new HDD's being able to choose what drive i want to save my stuff into
without having to unplug/replug (single external) and move HDD's around
but could also insert the old drives to find old files copy it over to my computer, do my work-then go back to the new drive and send it there are you confused yet? I am :)
I have a 2012 Mac Mini and a 2018 mac mini
I use both so hopefully id only have to move 1-cable and get to use the one 4drive bay
Id be using it as a DAS not a NAS from what ive learned in my googling
