Hello everyone, I'm new to Mac Pro upgrading. I inherited this Mac Pro early 2009 4,1 with the single 2.66ghz quad core processor. I have flashed it to 5,1 and it is running High Sierra. I'm building this machine to use as a good edit suite for Final Cut Pro, Premiere, and Logic. I had these 3 sticks of Corsair Vengeance 8gb DDr3 1600mhz ram that were unused from a different computer build, and I wanted to upgrade the ram from it's previous 8gb of 4x2gb crucial ram. I put the three sticks in, thinking it wouldn't work, but it booted just fine and displayed the 24gb of ram in both the about me section and the system report. I know these processors can only handle the 1033mhz, so these sticks are being downclocked to that speed.

My question is, since this is not an official ram upgrade package from crucial or owc, and since they are clocked much higher at 1600mhz, can running these sticks cause any harm to the computer after use? It boots just fine, but I'm worried about damaging any logic boards or the processor.

Any help or insight is appreciated! I really like this machine, and I'm planning on getting an RX 580 for it soon to get it up to mojave. Pics below with the corisair ram installed, and all the info of the corsair ram I have. I know it's not officially supported, but if I can upcycle some unused components that would be awesome, but I am open to getting the proper kind of ram if this is not a good idea. I'm keeping it shut down until I can be sure it won't cause any issues on the long or short term.

Thanks for help!

No, there will be no negative effects from running that RAM over OWC or any other brand. Also, the Nehalem processor your using will down clock that RAM to 1066mhz, not 1033. If you upgrade to a Westmere CPU, after a PRAM reset, it will then run at 1333mhz instead.

Enjoy your RAM boost!

Thanks for the help everyone! After your replies I booted the Mac Pro and I've been using it all evening for classes and even had my server running on it through the night with no issues. This is the the best community!
