I allocated 64GB of space for vista and the only programs i've added are chrome, firefox and office and I'm left with only 29gb of space left... man what a resource hog.

That sounds about right. Vista Ultimate is about 13GB without updates, Office is another 2GB.. so that 15GB right there... 64GB - 15GB = 49GB.. then throw in some updates and system restore points and hibernation file (4GB I'm guessing).. 20GB is extremely plausible.

Not really a system resource hog since I run Vista Ultimate in a virtual machine with only 27GB allocated and I got Office, Visual C++, DivX, VLC, yadada.. and still have 8GB free.

well that sucks, hopefully windows 7 will be smaller. I'm still tweaking it so maybe I can squeeze out more free space from the system restore and paging files.

I do like the index score, 5.0 compared to 4.1 on the dell 1330 i have laying around.

7 is smaller, but not that much smaller.

uncleSmurf, have you tried uninstalling some Windows components (such as Movie Maker, etc.)? Go to "Control Panel" and then to "Programs". Under "Installed Programs" you'll see "Turn on or off Windows features". You can uninstall pre-installed apps that are installed during the initial Windows installation. Careful though, some of those features are actually very useful. Only do this if you know what you're doing.

Yeah, I think you could reduce the space allocated to system
restore. There is this in Windows 7:

sysrestore.png

I'm not sure if that's available in Vista. If not, perhaps there is
some other way. IIRC, under Vista the sys restore area was by
default 15% of your disk.

And you could reduce the size of your page file if you're not using
much memory. Again, the default for your page file is likely to be
1GB of disk space for each 1GB of RAM.

There's an interesting article on Windows 7 disk space here, if
you're interested:

Thanks for the link. I can definitely free up some gigs by adjusting those values.

Not available in Vista. You're pretty much stuck with the 15% thing in Vista.
