Fair enough that the unified memory options are tied to the chip you choose, but what does storage have to do with it?

Why do we need to pay $300 to bump up storage to a paltry 512GB if we want to get 32GB instead of 24GB?

Yeah, but even then we should be able to pick whatever storage we like, it has no impact on the amount of memory we want.

How did you get that option? I don't see any limits to how you can mix and match SSD with RAM when I view laptops here in the US, but some RAM configs are tied to the level of processor.

The SSDs Apple uses have actually been high grade enterprise class drives that can take a serious beating, but would indeed be silly to not allow people to buy any available storage config they want.

Yeah, it’s weird. Could have sworn yesterday right when it came out that you could upgrade the base model to 32GB of RAM. Now, you have to select the mid-tier model for that option to even show up, and yes, it requires 512GB of storage.

Hate to say it, but Apple may indeed have changed it in the last day without telling anyone.

EDIT: I’m in the US, too.

I guess Apple builds an inventory of M4 SoC’s and the demand for 32GB/256GB isn’t there so you need to go for 32GB/512GB which is fair enough. Most people wanting 32GB RAM would be expected to be working to some fairly hefty amounts of data or VM’s, so I can see why it’s not a configurable option.

If significant money was to be made from a 32/256 sku then Apple would offer it.

They do it because they can. If you can live with the base model Macs you should buy them. If you can’t and need more internal storage or RAM then you will quickly double the price of the machine.

It’s a shame but they are absolutely steadfast in their determination to never provide adequate storage at a reasonable cost. It’s just not what they do, it’s brilliant as it allows a great entry price but also allows a pure profit mechanism for AAPL.

What is everyone looking at? I still can't find any BTO machines that require you to upgrade to 512GB before you can buy 32GB of memory.

I really wish people just stop complaining about what Apple charges for their stuff and what they sell for configuration. Apple has always charged way above more than Windows Based Hardware and limit configuration. Period. Just buy what you can afford or don't buy it at all and get a Windows Machine at a fraction of the cost.

This isn’t entirely true. The base configurations of Macs are all excellent deals. The iMac is in a class of its own without peer (literally there isn’t even a screen like it sold separately) and the new Mac mini base is an incredible deal in an incredible form factor.

Where Apple is outrageous these days is almost entirely in storage upgrades along all products and RAM upgrades. Absolutely ridiculous pricing. But it works. Buy AAPL
