I'm new to Mac and curious, is this normal for all Mac OS? To take as much ram as possible or is it something new to Yosemite? mostly it stays 7 and I have 8 total? Are they gonna fix this? I'm asking mainly because Yosemite is kind of choppy especially after 10 minutes of using it, apps open kinds laggy especially Safari. It's a rMBP 2014. Should I downgrade to Mavericks? Will it be better without lags?

That's why Apple added the usage meter--as long as you stay in the green, your RAM usage is fine. My rMBP with 8GB has never left green.

Notice where it says "Swap used: 0"? That's one of the more useful numbers. Swap refers to an area of your hard disk that is treated like RAM. Memory-related slowness is virtually always related to excessive use of the swap space - i.e., physical RAM is too low and the system is forced to rely excessively on the massively slower hard drive. It's normal for there to be some swap usage on any system, but a high number here can indicate you're running low on physical RAM on a regular basis.

In your case, there has been no usage whatsoever of your swap file since the last time you rebooted, which indicates you haven't even come close to taxing your available RAM.

And yes, the usage meter is introduced in Yosemite is very handy.

In any case, whatever "lag" you're experiencing is definitely not RAM-related. When you say "laggy", what do you mean exactly? Are apps taking a long time to open?

Hey, thanks for the info, quite useful, at least ram's not the problem :D
Well , laggy is when you click Safari you just observe the chopppiness in the graphics when it opens, it's just not smooth and it's a bit delayed.
Youtube - it's kind of slow responding on some commands.
Some apps just hang randomly.

Am I the only one having these issues in the Yosemite 10.10.2?

In my experience, Yosemite's UI has performance issues, regardless of what hardware you have, and it's especially bad on Retina Macs. I know I just replaced a 2013 Macbook Air with a 2015 Retina Macbook Pro. I was rather disappointed to see that UI responsiveness was significantly worse than my Air, despite the hardware being much faster. It's lots of little things: resizing and dragging windows is choppy, fades and various animations (like fading between panes in System Preferences) are pretty rough. It's not debilitating, but it is annoying. It's funny, because Windows 8 absolutely flies on the same system, even with 250% DPI scaling. Not a hint of choppiness anywhere. Definitely something Apple needs to fix. When I was in the Apple store buying said system, I played with various demo machines and noted that every single one demonstrated the same issues. Everything from a base model air to a top-of-the-line iMac. Both Retina and non-Retina, but definitely much worse on Retina.

All that said, it really should be limited to animations. You really shouldn't be seeing apps going unresponsive. Are there particular apps that do this a lot?
