I just bought a 17" MBP this weekend and noticed a slightly bigger gap when closed than my old 15" MBP which I returned a few months ago. I'm pretty sure this is a nitpicky issue but I see this on the boards alot so its probably something I'll have to live with but just wanted to see if this gap is overly large or not.

little bit but is not that big of a deal. Overtime the gap will get smaller. Try putting two heavy books over ur MBP and leave it resting all night.

What  That is something i'd never do or suggest, deliberately deforming the case so the screen is pressed tight down on the keys.

As others have said, the gap is normal.

I have a 15" MBP which also leaves gaps at the edges (about 1-2mm at the most).

It's fine. Use the protective sheet on top of the keyboard if you're worried, but two 'reasonably weighted' books won't damage it. I left mine overnight with a book on either side, just heavy enough to push the sides flush. Did it with my PowerBook too.

In terms of it being normal though, yep!
