is this upgrade idea i have workable?

technically once you get the vista upgrade, (license wise) it invalidates your XP license. However, I dont know if installing Vista w/ key would actually mean your XP key refuses to activate though.
I don't think you can use the Vista upgrade coupon.
When you buy an OEM disc, you effectively make yourself the computer manufacturer in Microsoft's eyes. The Vista upgrade coupon is only valid to get Vista from your manufacturer. If you bought an OEM disc, you would therefore be asking yourself to provide yourself with Windows Vista, which wouldn't be possible.

You would violate two provisions of the user agreement (1) running the OEM XP on hardware it was not brought with and (2) not destroying XP when you buy the Vista upgrade.
I think the licensing rules on getting hardware with OEM software is fairly fuzzy. You can get away with getting an OEM OS bundled with something like a SATA cable or a mouse or something like that.
lets not get into the legality of the OEM license, i was just asking if it would work. the OEM thing has been debated in plenty of threads and thats not the argument Im making.
your second point however is one i had not considered.
you dont need to destroy XP at all, because you would need it for the upgrade anyhow. i suppose it is technically "part" of the license, so it shouldnt be in use at the same time. but on the other hand, i am putting a license for XP out of commission (the one on my windows PC), so in reality it seems completely fair to me.
