My internet has been out for a while and will have to speak to the internet company. I been using my building's wifi where a lot of people use the shared wifi. But when I do online banking and things like that, I use my data and tether on my laptop for that.

Is there any issue updating IOS on the building's shared wifi in terms of security issues? This building shared wifi has been around for a long time and most people use it because they don't have their own internet.

I don't think it would be good idea to update IOS on my iphone on my data plan? Or is that better than updating it on shared building wifi? Does anyone know how much data in terms of mb or gb it would use?

The update is signed and the signature is checked before the installation, there is no way someone else can forge a valid signature, unless they steal Apple private keys.
It's safe even on shared wifi.

No problem at all, you can safely update both your iOS and all the apps on your shared WiFi.

My take is that it is always a bad idea to connect to a "unknown" network where you don't know anything about the devices and people that are using it. But in the event that you have to turn on ADP (link below). And maybe look into using a reliable trustworthy VPN provider (none of them are free).

Personally I would get a better dataplan. And in the Event you have a provider and phone that offers 5G, use that instead if possible.

No problem, i even updated several times over the open wifi in a train or hotel. The update itself is secured by a signature. If you're concerned about data security, simply use a VPN.
