Is upgrading to 2.0 worth losing freedom?

I'm beginning to wonder if upgrading to 2.0 will be worth the freedom lost. There are a number of really cool apps in installer that apple will never allow. For instance, emulators, spicy chickens customize app, ebook readers(from my understanding there is no file system access), openssh,islsk,etc,etc.


I'm interested, what apps in the appstore would make it worth the freedom lost??


I expect 2.0 will be a challenge for the hackers, and I'm waiting.
 
From what the iPhone Dev Team has told others, they have a good handle on the 2.0 beta that is out. The real problem lies with the possibility of the iPhone phoning home over the App Store or in some other means reporting the changes.
 
Yup i'm betting I will get to have my cake and get to eat it too.

That is having 2.0, the App Store and Installer with a Jailbroken device.

My guess it the Touch might be easier to get to though due to the few number radios ie one for WiFi vs how many for cellular and WiFi. Then again if you go to ipodtouchfans.com there are some hints at what is to come/going on.

Then again I wouldn't do much with anything for a few days at the least.

What Apple is doing with the iPhone is the same as if Palm years ago had sold PDAs that you could only use software from Palm.com on. Would people have stood for that? Probably not.

Or what if you bought a MacBook and were told you could only run apple approved apps.

Its the same thing that is happening here. What the hacking community is working so hard to do is have the same level of openness palm had years ago. Somehow I think the app store is a step backward, not forward

I'm hoping the upgrade and app store will provide a better quality of apps that we can feel more confident installing.
I'm sure we've all tried something from the installer thinking it is a worthwhile addition only to discover it creates a problem and we're scrambling back to iTunes hoping a restore will cure it. I've had to restore mine 3 times in the last 6 months and thankfully it now works perfectly .. yes it is JB, but I'm more cautious on what I choose to install now.
 
I think the app store will indeed bring more useful, polished apps with a more consistent UI. After all, the jailbroken installer apps were designed without any knowledge of the iPhone APIs, just what hackers managed to reverse-engineer or port from the grown-up OS X. This is why many of them look a little half-assed (but considering that they were 'black boxed' without API support, I'm shocked that some are as well-coded as they are...big props to all the skilled iPhone hackers & coders out there--imagine what a bitch it would be to figure out how to compile a compiler before you can even begin coding).

That being said, I hope jailbreaking is still possible, at least for Rev 1 iPhones. I would hate to lose my UNIX-y apps like MobileTerminal from the Installer.app people.
 
If you assocaite your freedom with software, then yes, I'll be risking my freedom by upgrading. ;)
 
Im ready to update! My iPod touch was jailbroken and I had nothing but problems with it, freezing up safari and music stopping in the middle of songs etc. I cant wait.
 
I see apples perspective. They want to control the entire experience. But there are some seriously cool installer apps. Granted 95% were unpolished but the others were cool as hell.

I mean scummvm. That rocked.
Openssh, terminal,smb, books,vnsea,finder

I think apple should say sign this waiver and you can jailbreak but don't come crying to us about it.

The last firmware of 2.0 that I saw broken was in March unless Ive missed something. I don't think its going to be so easy this time.

We will see Friday :)
 
It seemed like it took Apple FOREVER to get to where they are now with the apps. A lot of the apps I love and would miss, but I am very interested in seeing what they have to offer officaly.:confused:
 
I am wondering one thing: does firmware 2.0 allow one to use a real screen background, like Summerboard? To be honest, that is one of my favorite features of the jailbroken iPhone. However, I would really benefit from having native Exchange support, so I would upgrade to 2.0 right now if custom wallpapers are supported.
 
Well, I just took the plunge and upgraded to 2.0. I couldn't handle the anticipation. And I can say without a doubt that the 2.0 version that I have (5a345--the 'final' version) is buggy as hell. Mail.app crashes on startup and it is impossible to delete mail accounts that you have on 1.1.4, prior to updating. I have a feeling 2.01 can't be far behind, to address email stability problems.
