is usb C type headphones the future of smartphones?

Yes with an asterisk. The asterisk is that the industry decides between passive and active. It would also help if Apple jumped onto it for iPhones. We may hate it, but Apple pushes mobile tech far more than they should be able to.

This. Considering Apple actually went with usb-c on the iPP, I think the chance of them replacing Lightning on the iPhone is much higher than it was a month ago. I makes too much sense—same type of headphones could be used across their entire product line (iPhone, iPads, Macs). That being said, since when does Apple do anything that makes sense?

The future is wireless. We are simply in a transition period. USB-C imo is worse than a standard 3.5mm jack as it is wider and more cumbersome size wise. Compared to USB-C, I prefer lightning.

I think once people are accustomed to wireless charging, Apple would simply ditch the port altogether on the iPhone. My guess is in 2 years time or so.

If the industry could agree on how to handle USB-C headphones then sure. Now it's a mess where dongles from different companies don't work interchangeably because some phones have a built-in DAC while others bundle it into the dongle itself.

Removing the headphone jack still causes more problems than it solves.
