IS video out with the composite cable constant with 3g phone?

Before I shell out the money for a video cable I am trying to find out if the video signal via the apple video cables is continuous.

ie will i see what’s on the iphone screen all the times ie the springboard, mail, maps etc , or is a signal only sent when it is playing a video in iPod mode?

It only sends signal to the TV when your have a video playing, or have music playing. There is no way to show the home screen ect. at the moment
