Is Virtual PC worth it???

just wondering....the only reason im getting it is to play poker..... is it TOO SLOW??? my ibook specs are at the bottom...any feedback would be gr8...

IMHO it wouldn't be worth your money to purchase VPC just to play poker. You should take a look at some games made for the Mac.

BUT...im not paying for it....my company is paying for it for "business purposes"...

it is only worth it if you need it to run a specific windows only program. IMHO, it is not worth it just to play poker, and it won't play very many games anyway. So only buy it, IMO, if you really really need it.

I just downloaded it the other day - I have a MSDN Enterprise license - and installed it on my Mac at home. It's a dual 1.25 Power Mac G4. It runs OK. The System Properties control panel says it's running a Pentium II at 650 Mhz although I'd say if feels like less than that.

I'm not used any apps on it, but I plan on running some things later this week and next. It would probably play poker fine. There are lots of poker java apps on the web for playing with other people. My wife plays one regularly, but I don't know which on it is.

thanks for the info bbarnhart...problem is i play weekly tournaments on ultimatebet.com , and i HATE using my windows machine. and they make u download an .exe file to install it. it would be the only prog i would be using. which OS of windows do u have on it??? and size ???

Fr4om my experience it is PAINFULLY slow and not worth it, look for OSX poker,

Virtual PC is really slow. I use it for MS Access and even that runs very badly. I say its not worth it.

I run Virtual PC on my TiBook 500. It runs great. I play poker on PartyPoker.com and play Roller Coaster Tycoon. It is also nice to use to test software (shareware) for friends without internet, then burn the programs to CD and give them to them.

It is cool.

I use VPC to run Windows 2000, on which I run Outlook, Oracle client and other software development activities. It runs very well... then again, I don't run anything graphically-intensive.

(Yes, I have Entourage, but Outlook/W2K/VPC runs circles around Entourage. And there is no Oracle client for Mac OS X. I wish there were. All of our Java and Swing apps work fine in Mac OS X.)

edit: Forgot to mention: The coolest thing about VPC is being able to back up the entire virtual machine to a DVD-R and store it, or even move it to a different computer. The whole thing! And it's sure to work too.

VPC for that is probably not worth it. There are some cheaper windows emulators out there. Guest PC and iEmulator (the best IMO). There is also Wintel... don't use that. It is based on BOCHS, which is very slow.

For fairly simple (graphically) software, VPC works fine for me. I use it on my PowerBook to run PSpice (circuit simulation software) primarily and it works well. Most of the time I can't even really tell that it's emulated, the GUI is perfectly responsive. Occasionally I'll get a little lag, but that happens on a real PC too. For just playing poker I'm not so sure. I'm sure there are poker apps for OS X out there that you could use. In my case PSpice is almost necessary. I'm starting to move to a Mac alternative (MI-SUGAR), and it's working very well, but in order to share files I have to be able to fire up PSpice sometimes.
