I have found that I am able to eliminate my annoyances with Googles recent updates by switching to Yahoo in Safari settings.

The links are still underlined and they don't have that obnoxious "mini" profile that pops up at the top of the results when you do a search for a famous person, it has Wikipedia for the first result which is what I'm always looking for.

Are there any disadvantages to using Yahoo over Google?

Yup :(

Apple: "screw what's best for the customer... we'd rather be petty!"

That's ridiculous. I hope both companies go under and a superior company steals everything that is good from both platforms and is loyal to the consumer.

I've found for general searches (such as looking up facts, dates an event took place, unit conversions, TV/movie info, etc.) all the search engines seem to be pretty adequate. They may display the info differently, but it's all the same info. However for more specific searches (such as troubleshooting, etc.) I've found Google to be a more reliable option.

For your uses, if Yahoo is working fine then go ahead and use it. No one else should care which search engine you're using.

I'll do the
tl;dr up top…You will get information from any search engine you choose so in the end, it should come down to your preference. I definitely prefer something other than Google for my iPhone and iPad these days.

Personally, I switched everything to Bing as my default search engine about 2 weeks ago. Google's search results continued to take 1/2 of the page with sponsored results and various other tidbits that I am far from interested in. I opted to try another engine. I like Bing for the most part but Google seems as though it is a bit more intuitive.

For example, if I Google a celebrity's name, I would like IMDB and wiki to be the first few results. There have been a couple of times in Bing where IMDB was not even on the first page. Perhaps because I was looking up a more obscure actor's name.

Now I am using this javascript blocker which I think helps with the whole Google sponsored links issue I have. Doing a side by side search, my results vary between google and bing.

Depending upon what I am looking for, I may not want to see shopping results. This is a search I actually did and first and foremost, I was curious about whether or not there was actually sunscreen for dogs. Shopping links are nice and all, but chances are, I'm shopping on Amazon if I am shopping online for something like that.

Bing also does this thing about connecting to Facebook. I want to rid the screen of that option because no, I do not want to connect with FB and let half the world see what the hell I search for on a daily basis.

As for Yahoo!, I do not typically use their search engine but I do read their poorly written news articles. If you want to see some **** journalism, that's the place to go. Like a moth to a light, I still go to that damn site and read their sensationalized headings and articles riddled with poor sentence structure and baseless facts. :)

When you say sponsored results do you mean the mini profile Google displays at the top when you do a search for a person? I hate that.

I suppose I do. In spite of all my efforts, I could never get those to not show up. When I search using Google now, I don't get them as long as I'm running this JavaScript Blocker.

My parents use Yahoo, I use google.

There have been times when my dad searches for something like to renovate his passport, or stuff like that, and Yahoo gives result for some shady sites, some even claiming to sell (!) passports

I google it with the same keywords, and google gives the U.S Goverment site as a result, which is just what I needed.

This happens with many things, such as finding the address of a company to send a check to them, or contacting USPS because the mail didn't arrive, always Yahoo gives crappy results, Google gives the exact result.

Yahoo search, as far as I'm aware, is powered by Bing. Not sure if that'll result in different results... don't care. I use Google unless I'm on my Windows Phone which comes with a dedicated Bing button.

EDIT: Curiosity got the better of me. Turns out Yahoo and Bing pull identical results.

Its a safari extension so download from my post here (#12) and just install. It just kind of works. Let me know if it doesn't.

Ok great thanks. Is there any way to bring back the underlined hyperlinks in the results the way it was?

It's not letting me download it to my phone.

Not sure what you mean by bring back underlined hyperlinks and the extension won't run on your phone. At least I don't think so.
