Mine was quite for a few days, just got it. Now, there is a throttling buzzing sound coming from the back side.

Any thoughts, are there already hardware issues with these units?

thinking that too

Yeah, I am thiking that too. The HD I believe is close to the top, where the vent is. And this sound sounds like a fan whizzing.

Why would this be something that just came on after a couple days of use?

It never stops...

Like every other computer the imac isight make noise, over time it will make more and more noise. Cant belive this still surprises everyone.
The fans collects dust, get worn down...
On the imac the fans are right infront of you, in most other computers they are in a case under your table, it all matters...

What do you guys expect? Just because apple relases a new imac it is supposed to be ultra quite?

And, try searching the archives before posting, this subject have been up dozens of times...

Its a computer - it make noise!

ja wohl

I guess the only point to make is, that with something brand new, and then in three days for something to creep up, one wonders? Is there something involved in this - sometime that might break further down the line? Sooner?

I chatted with apple support, they said reset PRAM, NVRAM and the SMU. Tried that, but nothing. I guess I was hoping for too much.

I may chat with the apple store guys and see, I don't really think that it should be this loud this soon, and certainly not just in the three days of life it has run.

I know this is considered the rev C for the iMac G5 line, however it does sport a new case design which is slightly thinner and a new mobo. Should this not be considered as a rev 2A.

I know someone who is a writer that bought the 20" iMac iSight model based on my recommendation.

Well the first one had a defective microphone so using iChat turned into a night of insanity trying to figure out what we were doing wrong.

Short story: iMac was swapped out a week later at an Apple store.

Back to the long(er) story: The second unit is noisy! The fan sounds sort of like it has bad bearings in it. Kind of a rattle-y, subtle high speed knocking sound.

Was told by Applecare to return it to the store and they would "tweek it" (exact wording!) to get rid of the sound. 2.5 hours drive back to the Apple store, and were told it needed to be left to be checked out.

A week later get a call back to say they can't find anything. Well, it's about 90 decibels in the store.

At home the sound is obvious and annoying as hell. The poor dude can't relax and focus on writing. He's pissed.

Apple denies knowing anything about this "problem" yet it has been posted on apple.com discussion boards by numerous users having this problem.

Recommend to your writer friend to buy a refurb rev B. :)
