hey guys,

when my 20" iMac screen is black, such as when watching a movie, its four corners are slightly brighter than the rest of the screen, is this normal?

if you could just check and let me know that would be great, as from searching there seems to be much about 24" iMacs having uneven brightness but nothing about 20" models.

if its of any interest the colours on my imac seemed more 'washed out' than on my powerbook G4, could this be to do with the uneven screen?

FWIW, my Viewsonic VP930 LCD does the same... only a problem when watching a movie. Still, it sucks. And not all LCDs have it so I guess it's not "normal". Some panels just do it, sadly.

It's different, the 24" has darker edges (I've seen one myself at the store). You're talking about brighter corners ;-)

People, please don't forget that you're looking at photos, that exagerate the effect (the same reason why your camera has problems dealing with backlit situations and you have to use fill flash, when your eye sees everything in the shadows just fine).

So what you see will always seem much worse than real life... I'm not questionning the OP's observations, just telling you what I think from a photographer's point of view.

yeah the photos make it a little worse than it really is, however it is VERY noticable when awtching a movie and the screen goes black, for example in between scenes. I was hoping that loads of people would basically let me know if they had this problem or not, so i can guage whether to send it back to apple or just deal with it.

could anyone post photos of their imac with a black screen so that i can judge if this is normal or not, getting to an apple store to check involves a 110 mile journey for me and i only have 2 days to return my imac if this screen bleeding is unacceptable

what this is is an uneven backlight issue. adam christianson on the maccast (http://www.maccast.com) had a segment of his show a while ago that adressed this issue.

I don't think the problem is fixable, but you should return your computer, and buy a different one.

update

ok guys so i sent it back to apple for a full refund, which is rubbish because it means that im back to my slow powerbook for the near future. I'm thinking that i may as well wait untill macworld in january (does anyone know the date of this?), or untill leopard comes out (again, do we have an estimate arrival date for leopard?).

thanks for all the info so far
