Is your M1 MacBook Air affected by the rubber gap (rubbergate)?

My new BTO (1tb/16gb) just arrived and I really love it.
It's my second Macbook M1, the first had the rubber feet wobbling, so it went back immediately...

Only problem I see with this one is some sort of gap between the rubber and the case, on the lid (left side).

Here is the gap I'm talking about :

I know I'm probably a bit OCD here but do you think that's acceptable for a machine of such a price?
Is yours also affected by this?

No such issue. But doubt I'd notice or care if there were.

It's unacceptable considering you're paying a premium. Can you push it up with your thumb to close the gap? Otherwise, you can return it but risk running into other potentially worse quality issues like screen defects.

Thanks all for the replies. Decided to send it back and picked up a base model 512gb/8gb instead of a BTO. Long story short, I was so sure it might have a problem that I bought 2 and indeed, one had the wobbling rubber feet. So all in all, I got a good unit and returned the other one. Will keep that one for a long time!

Maybe it's covid but QA seem really off these days and I'm pretty sure 8gb will be sufficient for my needs as of now. Still, it's concerning and Apple should do a better job at inspecting units to ship only good ones.

I agree with you on this but you have to look at this realistically. They are shipping millions of machines per quarter. All companies will ship out misfires. It's common when you're serving such a large client base.

Sure I understand and I realize a lot of people won’t even notice those little flaws (and I wish I was one of those people). But the price is quite high so personally I’d rather have a flawless unit.

Ha, you totally misunderstood what I was saying. I'm honestly not sure where you arrived at that response? I was saying that Apple ships millions of machines per quarter so they're bound to have some misfires. You were saying that they need to check every machine to deliver only good ones. That's just not possible of any company to QA every machine, especially when it comes to something that requires a magnifying glass to even verify. Of course you shouldn't accept something you're not happy with. You did the right thing by returning it. I was just playing devil's advocate because no matter how big a company is mistakes will happen when millions of units are being shipped quarterly.

No I understand quite well what you said. And I know it's normal to have some faulty units in a batch. Last time I bought a 4K monitor I had to replace many units because of dead pixels so I know it's not always possible to have a perfect unit on the first time. They have tolerance rates and they probably check a couple of units / thousand, if those meet the requirements they must ship them.

Maybe Covid is also playing a role here, the demand is very high and maybe they accelerate the production? No idea.

16 would be ideal but not a dealbreaker for me.

This is a first generation product. At best, I'll keep it for 3-4 years and jump on the next best thing then. I've been stress testing this unit and it's strong enough for me, no doubt. I'll MAYBE do some tiny 1080p video editing projects, but 4k doesn't interest me so I'll be golden.

I would take 16 for the sake of it, if it was available in store but in Canada it's not, so 8 it is.
