Is your SR LED MBP ever completely silent?

I just got a replacement for my SR LED MBP that had the yellow tint. This one doesn't have the yellow tint but the screen is unevenly lit. The bottom is noticably brighter and the right side is noticably darker. It's to the extent that the space between the airport icon and the spotlight icon seems faded.

Another issue with this one that I didn't have with the last one is that the noise from the fans is noticably louder and it never stops. Does any one else have this issue? The fanspeed in istat pro is the same as on the last one i had.

I just got my 2.2GHz MBP yesterday and I can say this is probably the most silent laptop I've ever used. Even though I had the hard drive replaced by a 7200rpm Seagate Momentus. Putting my ear very close to the keyboard I find the fan is always operational — but it's very silent and I have not yet been able to notice it while I'm using the laptop for real. The keyboard makes louder noise!

I'm very happy about this computer, although the battery seems to only give a little over 3 hours of real-world use...

Completely silent? Well that involves all the fans being off and the hdd spun down. In other words no. The only time I've had a laptop completely silent was when I booted my dell off a flash drive and manually disabled the fan (and locked the cpu to 700mhz/.0716v). Lets just say my lap got pretty toasty, but my 17" laptop lasted over 4 hours.

In other words no, my new SR MBP is never 'completely' silent. However it is almost always inaudible from about 2m. I think apple is already cutting it very fine with the cpu temperature. Any quieter and it wouldn't be stable. Or 2.5kg.

Sorry to sound dense here but what aspect of noise is louder? Are you referring to the 'electric buzz'? If so has any other computer that you've had have the same 'electric buzz'? If not, is this buzz sound unique to just this one computer? Have you had it examined by Apple?

The problem with a 'buzz' sound is actually trying to identify the source of the buzz. Fans can have bad bearings, they can be wobbling slightly, they can be rubbing slightly, or it could be electrical interference being picked up by the right speaker,....etc. (Although these are all relatively rare failure points).

The only time its noisy is when I hammer it with games as the fan comes in to life. Otherwise can't here it running in a quiet room.

Well I have iTunes running, MSN Messenger, Internet, eMail and a temperature monitor and the computer is really silent.

Which is good, because I'd call these processes pretty much idle ones - they shouldn't require a vast amount of CPU power, hence why the fans are at low RPM and the computer is quiet.

My current temperature is 47'C too - for a Santa Rosa MBP.

When I load Parallel's Desktop the fans come on and it can be noiser, but that's expected considering Parallel's uses a vast amount of CPU power.

The problem with a 'buzz' sound is actually trying to identify the source of the buzz. It's the fan that is louder, but only at the right side. The louder sound of the fan sounds like an "electrical buzz" sound. But I'm sure it is not the speaker.

I guess it is bad bearing of the fan.

I heard the fans on mine quite a bit before the MBP Software Update. Since installing that, I don't notice them anymore. The computer is no louder than my PB G4 1.67.

I find my laptop pretty damn quiet. It's not entirely silent but it's pretty close to inaudible. Definitely not a bother. If anything, Apple is cutting it a tad too close with the fans. They take too long to kick in.

I think the fans on mine are pretty quiet at around 2000rpm each but every now and again they ramp up to about 6000rpm for no apparent reason. Apart from that I've not noticed any other 'noise'; just issues with everything else...

when my screen dims i find myself punching keys to figure out if the MBP is sleeping, it is that quiet.. i cant hear mine unless i am gaming in bootcamp

Out of the several laptops that I have used and experienced, my new SR MBP is by far the quietest machine. Sometimes I actually have to put my ear near the vents to make sure that the fans are running.

The fans at 2000RPM are very silent. I hear them only at night, when I am using the notebook while on bed- with everything else off (boy the backlit keyboard is sweet!)

I have the 15" 2.4Ghz. It is placed in my desk near the wall. I have to lean over it to hear anything. Right now the fans are at 2000rpm each.

I would suggest it may be quieter than the PPC Mac Mini I've had the past couple of years about the same distance away (possible further by a fraction).

2.4 SR Glossy, completely silent 90% of the time. Youtube causes a tiny amount of fan spin. Only time they really kick in is playing Rise of Nations for about 3 hours non stop.
