ISO: HDD/SDD bracket part #.

I want to upgrade to an SSD and HDD, but not via Apple. Not because I don't want to spend the money, but because I only need a 60GB SSD.

I'm looking for the Apple Part # for the bracket that holds both the SSD and HDD. I know you can stuff it in there, but I want to do it right, and I'll take the time to find the right parts to do so.

The HDD bracket is Apple Part #922-9152, which I found via the image below. If anyone can get that part #, I think it would be a tremendous asset to the MR community.

Please don't tell me I don't need it, or just do it xxxx way. I want the right part # so I can do this right. Thanks in advance.
 
It's probably easier to just install with unofficial parts as it can be done without e.g. removing the motherboard (just lifting it up slightly sufficed for me). Using all of these parts requires removal of original cables and wall, etc. The result will, of course, be neater but honestly who cares what the cables inside the computer look like… =)

Another reason could be to make the insides of your iMac look like an Apple technician made the modification, in case you ever have to send it in for a repair.
 
I read in the OWC iMac eSATA modification page blog..that a 2009 iMac 27 owner had managed to snake a SATA cable to the port used for the optical drive out the Memory Door. Not super graceful but he said it did work and you could even close the memory door with the cable bulging out the back.

Anyways, finding this Mac parts supplier has me wondering if it is possible to snake the cable through the memory slot then you could buy a replacement memory door from them and just modify it to extend the cable straight out or even add the SATA port connector if you really want. This would make if very easy to reverse this modification if needed and or cause Apple less consternation if they do see the modification.
 
Yes, but if I do it this way, and have an apple technician take care of the work, my warranty is in tact, and I don't have to open up and revert to normal each time I take it in.

I had originally talked to a local Apple Service Provider on the phone about just adding an aftermarket SSD and possible more and they said it's possible but they have to open a case with Apple first and get approved and then your repairs/mods are registered with Apple moving forward. Should be possible but the shop rate for the amount of work required to add and eSATA port would probably be pretty high.

I would feel pretty comfortable with my warranty status if I swapped in an SSD for the HDD and routed a SATA cable out the memory door.
 
Anyone who has opened up their iMac 27:

Can you tell if it would be possible to feed a SATA cable into the Memory Area and out the Memory Door opening?

I would like to try this as an option for getting an eSATA port rather than cutting the bottom grill as done by OWC. Since the Memory Door is replaceable I would cut that piece instead.
 
yeah guys - go ahead - i like what i read...

where would you connect a eSata cable inside the housing? Are there several available ports inside the iMac?

Just asking, because mine is supposed to arrive next week, and I love to tinker... will put in an SSD and a 2TB HD anyway, so an eSata connection would top it off!
 
This site has a pretty good explanation of the possibilities. There are 3 internal SATA ports on the logic board. Accessing the 3rd unused port to add an SSD or route externally would require loosening the logic board to access the other side of the board where the ports are.
 
what about a sata splittercable? Wouldn't it be possible to share one connection with the optical drive then? Just to make life easier, for the times one needs the drive. I for my part like to rent DVD's...
 
yeah, SATA ports can not share data so I have never seen such a cable. If you can get the SATA cable to extend outside the case you have options with SATA hubs and other intelligent drive bays.

I would be more than happy to have an eSATA port to attach to a NAS/RAID and just use a FW optical drive for the rare occasions when optical media is needed.
 
Apple components sent the wrong part

Well, I got my vertex 3 today along with the Ram upgrades. My iMac will arrive tomorrow with the Y-splitter.

Unfortunately, I ordered the pressure wall from these guys.

I got home and found that they had delivered a big box (i thought that was strange). I open the box and only to discover they sent me a mac pro dvd drive.

Looks like I won't be installing my SSD tomorrow. Going to call them and have them send out the correct part and pay for the shipping of the dvd drive back.

The part number you quoted is the hard drive fan, not the bracket. The part number for the 2010 iMac bracket is Apple Part #: 922-9485. Know however that this doesn't work with the 2011 iMac without modification!

Good thing they sent the wrong one, because if you're looking for a full Apple solution, we don't have one yet. The bracket does not fit correctly with the heat sink on the 2011 iMac, and must be modified in order to work correctly. Until we have all the apple part numbers for the 2011 iMac, we're kinda SOL.
