Issue with burning downloaded avi files

I just purchased an IMac yesterday after years and years of Windows machines. I have always used Nero to burn dvd's with downloaded avi/divx files and they played fine on my various dvd players.
Now the Imac, I downloaded a tv show avi file and burned it with the default Apple software. I ended up with jerky playback on my dvd player. I tried the same file through Toast and still had a jerky playback. I actually tried twice through Toast with one as data and one as divx - no luck.
I am not doing any encoding - just burning downloaded files as is.
I know someone may say try different media but I have used the same discs that have played fine on all my players through windows xp and nero.
Any thoughts? Luckily I still have my older windows unit around.

I had the same issue, and after much toubleshooting on the mac side, I installed XP on the iMac, and run Nero on the windows side. Since you obviously have nero and xp, just install them and save yourself the headaches. Another option I use myself, is to drop the avi into iDVD, and burn from there, u get cool moving menus, and the playback is just fine. Hope this helps......

I haven't used IDVD before. I started playing around and it looks like it will take an hour to encode my test tv avi. Can you burn through IDVD without the encoding going through?

I encode and select the Save as Video TS. Then I burn the folder in Toast. This way I can test the video ts in the DVD Player application prior to burning so I dont end up wasting a blank. Hope this answers your ?

I certainly wasn't aware that standard DVD players could play straight AVI files. Correct me but I always thought it requires the video ts folder to exist to play actual DVD's. How is Nero just burning an AVI file and it plays perfectly in standard DVD players? What's the point of encoding if you can do that?

there are several DVD players on the market that allow you to play Divx and Xvid files from a dvd or cd without reencoding. One of the better companies to do this is Oppo but there are other companies out there. Some of the upconverting samsungs also do it.
