Issue with Photos and videos from GoPro

Hi all. I have recently purchased a GoPro Hero 5 and have noticed that when playing back the videos on my Mac in the Photos app, they seem to be very laggy and choppy (not sure how to better explain it). I have tried many different video settings (different resolutions, FPS, as well as trying PAL and NTSC), but the results seem to be the same.

I have looked at videos I have in Photos that I took with a friends Hero 4 and they play without any problems. The most interesting thing is, the videos play perfectly on my iPhone and iPad (through iCloud Photos).

Any suggestions what else I can try?

The hero 5 has higher frame rate and resolution,look up App Store if there is a dedicated playback app for your Mac. I used the Sony s100vr action cam,no problems with playback through sonys original video transfer app.

How much memory do you have in your macbook? Have you tried someone elses laptop?

Actually, based on what I have read the Hero 4 and Hero 5 are pretty much the same in terms of internals, which is why it is so confusing to me why the old videos work and the new ones don't.

I have over 200gb free, so that shouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately I don't know anyone else with a Mac and the only other Mac we have at home is so old that it only runs iPhoto

I have tried to look through every setting on my Mac as well as GoPro, but haven't been able to find anything else that could be causing the issue.

Okay, I seem to have discovered something new after playing around more with settings. It seems now that it happens with higher FPS (anything above 60 seems to be the issue, no matter the resolution). Meaning all my slow-mo videos at higher FPS are very choppy.

What I did just try, and what seems to have worked, is that I set up the slow-mo sequence on a video, then exported it and imported it back into photos and now it plays without issues. While this might be a solution, it seems like an extra hassle and now that the video was exported and imported, I can't play around with the slow-mo sequence if I would need to, in the future for example. Not to mention it was very difficult to do it with the video being choppy.

I also tried importing the video directly through GoPros app, but that didn't work either. Now I have no idea if I'm still missing some setting or something, since slow-mo videos from my iPhone play without any issues.

Photos isn't the greatest app for playing back video. I use it just for cataloging my files.
