Issues installing Mountain Lion GM

Hello.

I have the following issues with trying to install the GM version of ML.

I cannot find a way to burn the installer to a DVD to be able to boot from it.

I tried the following:

Mounted .DMG file.

Burnt the mounted image (which contains all the files) to a DVD.

The DVD does not boot from startup (I restart, hold down 'Option' key, pick the DVD from the list titled 'EFD boot' (or something like that) and it displays a restricted sign.

So I then tried to load up disk utility, click 'Burn', browse to the original DMG file but I am told there is not enough space on the DVD (how is that possible when I could burn it manually?).

Finally I found out that if I load up disk utility and click the 'Restore' tab and point to the original DMG file as the source I cannot the click and drag the Superdrive icon as the destination.

I basically want to create a bootable DVD from the DMG file I downloaded of the ML GM.

Part 1: For all types of media

Install Mac OS X Lion.app and it should have been downloaded to /Applications.
Right-click (or Control+click) the installer, and choose Show Package Contents from the resulting contextual menu.
In the folder that appears, open Contents, then open Shared Support; you’ll see a disk-image file called InstallESD.dmg.
Launch Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities).
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disk image into Disk Utility’s left-hand sidebar.


If you don't have the Shared Support folder after opening the contents, then I'm not exactly sure how to burn it that way.

Hello.

I believe that the DMG file I have is the one you mention.

Otherwise when I mount the DMG file and then right-click the 'Install OSX Mountain Lion' icon > Package Contents > Contents there is no 'SharedSupport' folder!

I really do love the little clique of users who go into every ML thread and pull the nanny card, "Are you a registered Dev??? I think not...", while not actually contributing a single useful thing to the thread, the board, or the forum in general.

Isn't the forum against such things as sharing iOS and OS X developer copies to people who aren't supposed to have it? Breaking the EULA/NDA seems to be prohibited here.

With that in mind, why would you expect any other kind of response? I'm sure there are forums out there for people who pirate the software.

If you didn't download 10.8 from apple, the DMG you have IS InstalESD.dmg, just renamed something else.

Also: you are much better of using a HD/Flash Drive instead of a DVD.

Stupid question but do I mount the DMG file first?

I am sure I followed your instructions above and I got an error saying not enough space to burn to DVD (the actual DMG file) but when I mounted the DMG file and burned the result to DVD that worked (just could not boot from it).

When you open the DMG, you should see 'Install Mac OS X ESD' on the desktop. That means it is 'mounted'. All mounted drives show up in Disk Utility on the left side. There are many other ways to do this, but this is the easiest.

I still think you should use a Flash Drive, Hard Drive, SD Card or pretty much anything besides a DVD to do your install. DVDs are SLOW for installing a whole OS. Using a flash drive is at least 10 times faster.

It probably means you burned it wrong, but it is also possible DVDs are no longer a supported install method. With 8gb flash drives selling for under $7 now, it isn't worth the time messing with DVDs.

I will try it once more for DVD using the method you told me and if I get the same result I will use a USB stick instead.

Edit - Once I mounted the DMG and enabled the showing of all hidden files I then burnt them all to DVD and it works fine. The secret is to show all files.
