I did upgrade my Mac pro early 2009 (4.1) from El Capitan to High sierra 17g2208, through a patched version of the High sierra installer (since my machine does not allow me to install it directly from the store).

Before the OS update, my 970 was working just fine; but after the install, it won't start anymore. I see it identified as "display" and there is no kext loaded. The drivers version I have is the 387.10.10.1040.105, but I tried various other web drivers and none seems able to make my 970 functional again. I am using a GT120 to use the computer; which is not ideal but at least it is better than nothing.

Am I stuck and bound to go back to El Capitan at this point? The only other card I have is a PC ATI 5870, which I did use last year, before replacing it with the 970; it was working with El Capitan but I have no idea if it will work with High sierra.

Also as side note, I did try to update the firmware to 5.1; to install properly newer OS. Tried with the computer with only the GT120 and the SSD used to boot the OS, and when I tried to flash the computer; it just does nothing and boot back in OSX. Did try with El Capitan and with High Sierra and both times is the same. It tells me to shut down, start the machine with the power button pressed until the LED flash and then it just boot in OSX without flashing anything.

Not sure what to do at this point; can't go back to el capitan without wipe everything, can't flash the machine, can't use my gtx970 with high sierra :(

If you flash the 5,1 firmware on your Mac Pro you can upgrade without using a patched installer.
The 17g2208 build is for 2018 MacBook Pros so it will never let you install on a Mac Pro. Start with 17g65.

Thanks; I did try to update the firmware but nothing did work. I did go through a couple of threads on few forums, which were like 80 pages long, and nothing did the trick.
Every time I try to update the firmware, I get to the point where the light flash fast and the speaker emit the long sound, but then the machine just boot as usual. I have the latest firmware for the 4.1, which seems to match what is in the ram disk created by the app when I try to upgrade the firmware.

That is why I did go for the patched version of the OS. I do not have the capability to go back from 17g2208; since this is what was patched;so I will try to use the web drivers made for 17g65 and see if that does the trick.

Theoretically. . it's impossible that your Mac Pro has that Boot ROM !

Go to ( Black Apple top left of screen 0
1. About this Mac.
2. Select "System Report"
3. In the next screen select "Hardware" ( top of the list ).
4. Look for "Boot ROM Version.

Take a Screenshot of all the hardware list except for your Serial number ( private )

Start Preview & in the Preview File menu . .at the bottom . .select "Take Screenshot".
Draw a rectangle around the info shown in the Hardware list ( don't show your Serial Number ).

Save it as a JPEG.

Post the resulting pic here please.

Example : This is from my 4,1>5,1 cMP

17G2208 is the OS build number, OP only said he has the latest 4,1 Boot ROM, which I assume is the version B07.

OK, I stand corrected. But including the BootROM version would have been useful. :)

To troubleshoot why he can’t flash his cMP to 5,1, yes, that’s critical.

And IMO, flash it to 5,1 is way easier and better than running a patched OS.

I wholeheartedly agree. he needs to show us step by step how he ran the 4,1>5,1 update.
It's easy to make a mistake .. .I did .. .
