Issues with downloading, mounting Dmg's

I have a brand new rMBP 13 inch from my university. They installed some stuff and set up a printer before they gave it to me but other than that its pristine.

It was fine for a couple of days but when i went to download uTorrent the download failed, saying that the connection was lost on the last 0.1Mb. I downloaded chrome, which downloaded fine, and i was able to actually download the image but it refused to mount, with diskimagemouhter saying that the image wasn't recognised. The same thing happens with all the other torrent software i could think of.

I was able to download Blender and Runescape Dmgs which both mounted fine so...i'm really stuck.

I tried using my phones hotspot as well as my home wifi and no difference.

Maybe have installed/configured the machine to disallow certain actions, specifically, downloading and installing unapproved software.

Since it sounds like it's the university's asset, they might not want to pollute their machines and network with potential malware, virii. And legal liabilities re: downloading inappropriate/illegal items (read: not just pr0n, but also things like pirated video, music, software [university can/will be fined when caught]).

So, can see trying to stem torrents.

It's actually my laptop; i got a grant from the government, put money towards it to get a better model, so if that is the case then i'm a little ticked off.

Even if truly your own computer, university still might have rules around "bring your own device". Their network and resources, their rules.

For example: you are connected to university network, and your computer is torrenting to others potentially illegal and or pirated content. University again can be liable.

Then you should find out from them exactly what they did.

You should also find out exactly what the university policy on network usage is. Torrenting may be a capital offense, i.e. you could be blocked from all further network use.
