Hi All,

Has anyone experienced lagging keyboard issues with iOS 17, even with the latest 17.6 update? It seems to me that ever since updating to iOS 17, both the keyboard and sound are significantly lagging and do not function smoothly. I wonder if this could be due to running multiple keyboards in English and Romanian.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I’ve tried:

1. Setting up the phone as new without restoring from a backup. The keyboard works fine initially, but after a while, it reverts to the same lagging behavior.

2. Resetting the keyboard multiple times under both iOS 17.5 and 17.6, but the issue persists but not initially.

I’m curious if anyone else has experienced similar behavior and if there are any additional solutions.

Haven't seen this on any of my devices, running 3 keyboards. Any 3rd party keyboard installed?

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I've already tried deleting and re-adding the keyboard, resetting the dictionary, and toggling predictive text on and off. While these steps temporarily resolve the issue, it eventually reappears. I'm convinced it's a longstanding bug with the iOS 17 release.

Yea, it could be. I haven't seen it but that doesn't mean it isn't an issue. We all have different configs and use our devices differently.
Maybe it could be a good idea to log a case with Apple to feed them with some info. Especially if you can recreate the issue easy.

Any sign of keyboard lag in iOS 18 Beta?

It appears that this issue may be a bug. Currently, on beta 4 of iOS 18, the keyboard performance seems to be relatively smooth. I will continue to monitor the situation and update by the end of the week.

Maybe iOS 17.6.1 solved it, but if you’re already on the 18 beta and it is working well, maybe you don’t want to downgrade.

Yes, I also noticed on Aaron from Zollotech's YouTube channel that his viewers have also expressed concerns about the laggy keyboard in iOS 17. He recommended checking to see if this bug is resolved in iOS 17.6.1, so we’ll have to wait and see.

As for iOS 18, I haven't encountered this issue so far. The keyboard seems very smooth, even with Beta 5 now out. Hopefully, the update doesn't reintroduce the problem 🤞.

Try this;

Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Zoom.

Turn larger text on, then switch it back to default.

When I was having SERIOUS lagging issues, this worked for me.

Interesting, maybe this could be one reason myslef and maybe others haven't experienced keyboard lag. I have had display zoom set to "larger text" set since over a year back.

Edit: On a second thought, I don't have this enabled on my test devices and haven't seen it there. They are on the other plain phones with only a handful of company related apps installed and no tweaks.

I have mine set to default, but toggling it to larger text and back again fixed the lagging. Maybe it'll work the other way round too (larger text to default and back again).

I followed your suggestion to set the default text size to larger and then switch it back to the default. I will monitor the situation over the week and provide and report back.

Awesome! Yes, please do let us know how you get on :)

iOS 17.x was the worst update I’ve ever used. I dealt with everything from a crazy cursor to constant lag. Thankfully, iOS 17.6.1 fixed all of that. 🙌
I’m experiencing problems with the mouse pointer on my iPad Pro running 17.5.1, hopefully iPadOS 17.6.1 will solve it as well.
