Issues with MacBook Pro 15" Retina Mid 2014

The following is happening

1. Beach ball appears. Unable to force quit
2. Usually have to hold down power button to shut down.
3. Power button to switch on, sometimes folder with question mark appears a few times. Eventually i get computer on but it can freeze every few minutes.

No intensive programs are open just Word, Preview, Safari

Advice very welcome re any possible fixes I can do. Thank you

Sounds like either your hard drive has a problem or the OS. Are you running Big Sur?

Maybe you can try to update to Catalina (after making a TM backup) and see if that fixes it.

did we zapped the PRAM, alot?
i needed to do that on my 2010 MacBook air Mojave just 15 minutes ago
everything is running better!

Thank you. I use an old version of Sibelius software (version 6) and I don't think it will work with Catalina.

I have zapped the PRAM thanks. Fingers crossed
