I just got an iPhone, so this is my first experience with iOS since my first gen iPod touch.

I really like the OS, but the Phone app and the Messages app seem to be severely lacking, or maybe I'm just missing something. Is there an easy way to search for a contact from the Phone app without scrolling ALL THE WAY to the top of the contact list? It seems like there's no easy way to start typing a name and then dialing it unless you're at the very top, and a button to move to the search field would be great.

Also, am I missing something or is there no way to make a call from the Messages app? If I'm in a conversation with someone and I want to call them, it seems like there should be some way to call someone from the Messages app, but I'm not seeing a way or a good substitute for only that.

Any info or help, or is this something people have learned to deal with?

You don't have to manually scroll to the top to get to the search field. Just tap the top of the screen and it will scroll automatically to the top. The same for the Message app. Tap the top of the screen, and it will automatically scroll to the top where you find the call button.
