Running 10.8.1 on a mid-2011 MBA.

Like the widget iStat which reports the status of many components.

However, find the font size too small for my aging eyes. Difficult to
read unless take a screen snap and expand using Preview.

Is there any way to get the original widget to show in a larger format?

There's no option for that in the widget, but you can always zoom the screen to make the image bigger. Just hold the Control key and scroll your mouse button or slide two fingers up on your trackpad.

For me, Smart zoom works perfectly in Safari. It is non-functional
with Dashboard.

Zoom in and out by pinching or spreading two fingers also works perfectly
with Safari.

It is non-functional with Dashboard.

Any suggestions or others settings that might be conflicting?

Did you try holding the Control key and zooming with 2 fingers, as I suggested? It does work in Dashboard.

Yes I did the test with the control key pressed.

When I try with Safari, it only scrolls the page up without any expansion.

In the System Prefs, under Trackpad, I do not find the procedure you are
recommending.
