I've been accessing the 3 TB of disc on my iMac Corei7 via gigabit ethernet to my old PowerMac G5.

Looks like the power supply in the G5 finally bit the big one the night before last and that machine is totally inoperative so I'm trying to figure out how best to replace the capability.

Ideally, what I want to do is take the two formatted 1.5 TB SATA drives OUT of the G5 case and put them into some kind of powered case that can be connected to gigabit and then I can access them like I used to thru the G5.

Secondarily, it would be a Firewire 800 powered case but I'd prefer gigabit speed.

I've taken a cursory look around but it looks like most of the cases I've seen are:

(1) won't take already formatted drives.
(2) aren't Mac compatible.
(3) insist on some kind of internal auto-format of the existing drives.

I just want to take the existing drives as is and pop them on my subnet and be able to access them at gigabit speed.

Is there such an animal?

Don't think you'll find a case that does ethernet that won't want to format the drive (in order to put their own software in a little hidden portion of it).

Firewire 800 case should let you away with it.

Is there an issue with just buying enclosures for the drive and hooking them to the iMac? You could use the firewire 800 port as suggested. Asking for gigabit as the interface is unrealistic. You need some sort of OS in between to interface. Gigabit ethernet isn't meant for data transfer like that without an actual computer on each end to negotiate the data transfer.

Sigh

That's what I was afraid of guys. I've got a dual bay FW800 bay in mind that I can go and get friday after work and then I'll figure out what to do with the G5.

If Apple won't spring for a repair I might turn it into a monster Hackintosh case.
