:(:mad::(:mad:

My much loved and well used Epson Stylus Pro 3880 (best of the lot) has just informed me that I have no ink!

All bays have epson ink cartridges installed that yesterday were fine - more than fine.

Epson say needs service (£450 +vat) - this must be the biggest joke of 2019 (other jokes are available).

However repair not being considered despite >£500 of ink onboard.

Most of you know I pretty much just print for myself nowadays and am limited financially.

So.

Advise on replacement A+ paper nowadays to keep cost down and would like to add mono printing to the lists of desires.

Lets say less the £500, lasts forever, cheap to run and glorious output. NOT MUCH TO ASK.

The Canon gloss over spray is interesting method to reduce mezermiryzim (good spelling ?)

Oh and do NOT suggest HP products, violent projectile vo888ting is caused.

Can you get a 2nd hand 3880 to use all the ink up; that'll give you time to do more research?

Cheers :)

Good thought 'Hugh'.

flea-bay prices roughly the same a repair cost so double jeopardy! Buy second had(fails)= two printers twice the loss against epson purchase works and I keep it until ink runs out to it also dies. Bl**dy helps its a complicated method.

My answer will probably not be helpful to you at all since I am in the US. But I have a Canon Pro-100 that goes on rebate here all the time, so the net price is almost always under $130. And then I hacked the ink cartridges to refill them and buy ink bottles and refill on my own (those come from Canada).

But I think this particular printer rarely goes on sale on your side of the pond. But I've always had great results with it, even with generic ink. Plus here Canon often has mega paper sales if you buy their ink and then you get free paper as well.

I can get them all her - Amazon.

Never used a dye based printer - any comments on quality?

The 10s is pigment+chroma but much more £:(

How is Canon on Wifi and ethernet. My Epson was rubbish, real rubbish . 10m usb was the solution (powered) - more wasted money:mad:

+1 on the Canon PRO100. I got mine free with my EF 70-200.
I'm really happy with the results, but I'm not even an advanced printer, so my opinion might not be a lot to go by.
It does have the wifi capability, but I usually just hook it up with the USB, since I don't use it too often.

Oh, and a full refill (8 cartridges) is $125.

I could have sorted you out with a nice 4880 a few months back. Literally gave it away.
Who quoted you on the service? Epson?
Try Veritek. Might be a bit cheaper.

How much do you print? I did the maths a few years ago and realised I would save a small fortune by selling my old printer and sending work out to be printed at somewhere like The Printspace. The prints are better quality and there is much less waste.

OK all I get the points - basically get my prints over the web!

It is just that I have always been in control of my photography(digital anyway). This would be a backward step; in that I hand over the printing to someone else.

Just a hard thing to admit. I cannot afford to do my hobby.

You’re not really loosing control just letting someone else hit the print button. Some printers will even give you a profile to help you soft proof in Photoshop.

The final straw for me was when I realised that my printer was using more ink doing its self cleaning than It was printing pictures. I got through a whole set of cartridges when only printing black ink documents!
